Synopsis:
A former 1960s student activist turned private detective searches for missing Berkeley activist with whom he shared the barricades.
Moses Wine is contacted by Lila, an old flame back from his radical college days. She wants him to work for Miles Hawthorne, who is a candidate running for governor of California. Moses is told that a flyer is being distributed around the state with a doctored photo of Hawthorne with a 1960s radical named Howard Eppis — a fugitive who had been convicted in absentia for inciting violence against the government — falsely claiming that Eppis is supporting him for governor. This libel is a clear attempt to destroy Hawthorne’s chances for being elected. Moses sets out to find out who is responsible — with deadly results.

Shunji Iwai – Riri Shushu no subete AKA All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001)

$

29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

Quote:
Shunji Iwai’s Lily Chou-Chou offers eternal peace. She’s ethereal, the rebirth of death (indeed, she was born the moment Mark David Chapman shot and killed John Lennon), and all-powerful, a voice for a pop-cyber culture that feeds on her Björkness. In All About Lily Chou-Chou, fans of the fictional singer use her “amniotic” music to detach themselves from the violence that consumes Japanese culture. Yuichi (Hayato Ichihara) is obsessed with Lily: He gets busted for shoplifting one of her CDs and engages in endless conversations on the website Liliphilia with fellow Lily-heads, “connecting” with the so-called ether that is Lily, just like he melds into colorful rice fields whenever he listens to Lily sing. While Yuichi is quiet and reserved, his online handle (“philia”) suggests a boy erupting with adult emotions, and though his friendship with “blue cat” is elusive it still feels within reach. Such is the dreaminess and possibility the film taps into. A Lily concert, though, manages to shake Yuichi’s already troubled existence. A year earlier, when Yuichi had yet to discover Lily, a trip to Okinawa almost ended in tragedy; the island is restful, a place where man was made of woman’s rib (hence the power of the island’s women). The Okinawa scenes suggest the hope and purity of freedom, because there’s no real concept of revenge and humiliation on the island. Then, a disruption: Soon after Yuichi is rescued from a near-drowning, a car strikes a local man. It’s 2000 and Yuichi is forced into a life of petty crime in order to raise money for an aggressive bully, Hoshino (Shugo Oshinari), and by film’s end, he morphs from huntee to hunter. Iwai gracefully conveys even rape and murder, and the too-precious All About Lily Chou-Chou retreats into an ether far more suffocating than Lily’s music, and though he is tiresomely and needlessly distracted by cutaways to instant message exchanges between online Lily fans, his near-operatic attention to the constructs of sound and image becomes a disarming compliment to the deadly fears his characters must negotiate.

Chris Welsby – Collected HD Works (1973-1979)

29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

“Unlike the landscape painters and photographers of the nineteenth century, I have avoided the objective view point implicit in panoramic vistas or depictions of homogeneous pictorial space. I have instead concentrated on ‘close up’ detail and the more transient aspects of the landscape, using the flickering, luminous characteristics of the film and video mediums, and their respective technologies, to suggest both the beauty and fragility of the natural world.”

Born in Exeter in 1948, Chris Welsby studied at Chelsea School of Art and The Slade School of Art, and was an early member of the London Filmmakers’ Co-operative. His films and film/video installations have been exhibited internationally at major galleries such as the Tate and Hayward galleries (London, UK), the Stedelijkmuseum (Amsterdam, Netherlands) the Musée du Louvre and Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, France), the Museum of Modern Art (New York,USA), the Carnegie Institute, (Pittsburgh,USA), the Western Front, (Vancouver,Canada) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto,Canada).

Welsby’s work is characterised by a rigorous and experimental exploration of the relationship between natural systems inherent in the landscape, such as weather patterns and tidal flow, and the systematic methods and apparatus of filmmaking used to represent them. He has been working primarily with digital media since 1993, and is currently developing and exhibiting interactive video installations with collaborators in the fields of computational poetics and interactive audio environments, most recently dance, with the project Heaven’s Breath. He lives on a small island in British Columbia and he is Professor of Fine Art Film And Video, at the School for the Contemporary Arts, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada.

Founded in 1966, the London Film-Makers’ Co-operative started life at Better Books, a counter-culture bookshop on Charing Cross Road, where a group led by poet Bob Cobbing and filmmakers Stephen Dwoskin and Jeff Keen met to screen films. Initially inspired by the activities of the New American Cinema Group in New York, the London Co-op grew into a pioneering organisation that incorporated a film workshop, cinema space and distribution office. During its four-decade history, the Co-op played a crucial role in establishing film as an art form in the UK and participated in a vibrant international film scene. This BFI Player collection brings together new scans of films distributed by and/or produced at the London Co-op.

The history of the Armenian nation from a Marxist point of view.
Illustrated by Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons”.

***
Artavazd Pelechian’s Seasons of the Year (1975), a film-essay about the contradiction
and the harmony between man and nature, was the the 2nd and the last collaboration
with Vartanov, who had directed Autumn Pastoral (1971) from Peleshian’s screenplay.
In the Seasons of the Year (1975), for the first time, Artavazd Pelechian did not use any
archival footage likely due to the exquisite cinematography by Vartanov. Peleshian’s
Seasons of the Year (1975) is one of the 3 most important documentary films made in
Armenia, along with Sergei Parajanov’s Hakop Hovnatanian (1967) and Vartanov’s
Paradjanov: The Last Spring (1992).

The crew of the 30 minute black and white picture, also known as Four Seasons,
Seasons of the Year, Tarva Yeghanakner and Vremena Goda, reportedly included
Tigran Mansurian, who frequently worked with Parajanov, Vartanov and Peleshian.

Quote:

AMG: Cristiano Bortone’s inspirational Italian-language drama Red Like the Sky recounts the incredible true story of the early life of blind sound editor Mirco Mencacci. The victim of a freak childhood accident in 1970 that robbed him permanently of his sight, Mencacci is shipped off to a Genoan boarding school for Catholic boys, per the stipulations of the Italian government. Not one to be daunted or repressed, Mirco forges a heartwarming friendship with the daughter of the school gatekeeper; the two abscond together, via her bicycle, on a series of secret trips to the closest cinema. Meanwhile, at the school, Mirco also begins recording his own sound dramas with the school’s tape recorder and the use of audio books in the institution’s library. In time, the innovative young man invites other students to participate, who eagerly accept, and Mirco uses the activity to help each fellow student identify his own innate gifts and pursue his dreams. But when he leads a cadre of boys on a covert expedition to the cinema, the school administrators take swift and decisive action.

It seems Miss Wanderly is surrounded by dangerous men. There’s Joel Cairo, who uses gardenia-scented calling cards. There’s Kasper Gutman, with his enormous girth and feigned civility. Two women spend a weekend together at the North Sea. Walks on the beach, fish buns at a snack stand, mobile weather forecasts. Sky, horizon, water. One of them will soon return to her family in Argentina while the other one will try to come a step closer to the ocean. She travels to the Caribbean and the foreign makes her vulnerable. Then, the land is out of sight. On a sailing vessel she crosses the Atlantic Ocean. One wave follows the other, they never resemble. Thoughts go astray, time leaves the beaten track and the swell lulls to deep sleep. The sea takes over the narration. And when the other one reappears in it, the wind is still in her hair while the ground beneath her feet is solid. She returns and the one of them could ask: “Have you changed?”

Set to the music of Bach and Penderecki, Sonata for Hitler weaves together a bank of images from German and Soviet archive footage, drawing out a psychological dimension from the historical landscape at the end of World War II.

Alexander Sokurov’s Sonata for Hitler was banned by the Soviet authorities in his home country of Russia and was not released until a decade after it was completed. Much of his early work, in fact, was considered ‘anti-communist’ and remained unseen for years. It was not until 1996 that he produced his first internationally acclaimed feature, Mother and Son.

Sonata for Hitler could broadly be described as an experimental piece although Sokurov is very clear about distancing himself from avant-garde filmmakers. Perhaps because of his early experiences of censorship, Sokurov is famously reticent about the concrete meanings to his films and has often been quoted as saying (of cinema) ‘too much importance is put on words’. ‘Impressions’ are what have remained important in Sokurov’s work.

Sokurov is a Cannes Film Festival regular, four of his movies having debuted there. His most commercially and critically successful film to date has been a semi-documentary Russian Ark (2002), acclaimed primarily for its visually hypnotic images contained within a single, unedited, shot. About the movie

While shooting “Flying over blue field” we lived in Birtonas sanatorium hotel. I was watching treatment procedures. People were plunging into bubble, mud and mineral water baths. They were going circles singing, were standing under cold water spouts. All this seemed like a sacred ritual, that frees from scurf of life. They were naked, like just born, without any signs of standing in society. Movie – silent impression about tired people “harbour”..(taken from his website www.stonys.lt)

Various – Boris Karloff’s Thriller [Season 1] (1960)

$

29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

Thriller (aka. Boris Karloff’s Thriller) was an hour-long TV Horror anthology series that originally aired on NBC from 1960 to 1962. Horror fans who grew up in the 1960’s and 1970’s were nearly enraptured with the content and structure of this show. Indeed, in his non-fiction book on horror, Danse Macabre, Stephen King calls Thriller “the best horror series ever put on TV” (224; 1983 ed). At the beginning of each hour, Hollywood’s master of the macabre himself, Boris Karloff, would set the tone and prime the viewers for frightful and chilling dramatizations based on the works of some of the era’s greatest writers in the genre – writers like Robert E Howard, Cornell Woolrich, Richard Matheson, and Robert Bloch. Each episode was shot in eerie black and white and offered at least one story, with a few episodes dividing the hour between two or three shorter plays.

Spoiler – As with any Horror program, of course, there are a few clunker episodes that do not quite measure up to the rest, and Horror fans who are purists will probably be annoyed by the handful of episodes that are crime-based “thrillers” – most of which were produced and broadcast at the beginning of the series’ original run – rather than stories of the ghastly or macabre. When compared with today’s graphically gory product, Thriller might seem a little tame to modern audiences. But overall, the show has stood the test of time and can still inspire chills and goose bumps. – Spoiler

First of all, You have to give points for pulling off using humouristic elements as brilliantly as this, to describe something as dreadful as war. There aren’t many movies that have achieved that without feeling constrained, or more or less morally repulsive. Kubrick and Coppola were masters of that section, and Veli-Matti Saikkonen doesn’t come far behind with his interpretation of Veijo Meri’s classic novel.

Manillaköysi has an endless list of classic one-liners, but it’s still not based on cheap laughs or anything like that. The whole humouristic aspect of it comes from describing the absurdity of war, and the whole military system, by looking it with the eyes of a simple man, who’s thrown into it, and who simply doesn’t give a rat’s ass of it all.

The tone of it isn’t overly preachy or moralizing. If I would have to describe it with one word, it would be: unglamourizing. The main point of Manillaköysi is pretty much compressed in one of the most famous quotes of it: “There’s nothing supernatural about war, it’s just work like anything else.”
