Toshio Matsumoto – Bara no sôretsu AKA Funeral Parade of Roses (1969)

Quote:
What can be said about Funeral Parade of Roses other than that it is the personification of a fever dream, and the definition of a “mindfuck.” Toshio Matsumoto’s 1969 cult film is nothing but a nightmare that stares down at you with glaring eyes, and never allows you the opportunity for a rest even after it’s over because it will stay with you and haunt you for days. The images are so stark and hellish that one begins to believe that they are in the pits of hell, either that, or inside the mind of a mad genius. Matsumoto’s controversial film was a re-telling of the classic Oedipus Rex tale by Sophocles, and was given a brief release in the US in 1970.

Notorious for its candid portrayal of several drag queens and how their lives intersect with one another, the film played an enormous influence on Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 shock-masterpiece A Clockwork Orange. Featuring a superb electronic score that mixes music of old and new, Funeral Parade of Roses was the film that inspired Kubrick to find an electronic score for his upcoming film, which turned out to be A Clockwork Orange.

Funeral Parade of Roses is arguably one of the most visionary, trance-inducing films ever made. It depicts the unforgiving reality of transvestites, in particular Eddie, whose horrible past continues to haunt him everywhere he goes, and finally merges together with his present life. Eddie was portrayed by singer, performer and sometime actor Peter, the stage name of Shinnosuke Ikehata, who was only 17 years old when the film was released.

The film was made during a time when the movie-making industry was at its most experimental stage since the development of filmmaking in the 1910s and 20s. Employing drug-induced surrealism and avant-garde aesthetics, Funeral Parade of Roses is a film that is more concerned with pure emotions and sensations rather than pure intellectuality. After 40 years of being locked away in the vaults of obscurity, the film remains one of the ultimate enigmas in cult film history. In fact, to this day, it has never been given a proper DVD release in the United States and only became available on the foreign market several years ago.

Funeral Parade of Roses was Toshio Matsumoto’s feature film debut. He began his career by making experimental shorts in the late 50s and 60s and continued playing with the aesthetics of film with his first feature length work. He directed several others films in the 70s and 80s which have also remained relatively unknown since their release.

The haunting and surreal original score by Jôji Yuasa, and excellent cinematography by Tatsuo Suzuki make the film a memorable one. It manages to be a mosaic of music, montage, and the sex & drugs scene of the late-60s Tokyo underworld. The risks the filmmaker takes with the story and characters and the way he experiments with the camera work is phenomenal. Funeral Parade of Roses is a must for cult movie fans. Be prepared for an extremely disturbing and bloody conclusion.

Akira Kurosawa – Kagemusha [+Extras] (1980)

Just as many American studio-era directors found acclaim abroad that was denied them in their home country, by 1980 Akira Kurosawa’s reputation outside Japan exceeded his esteem at home. As uncompromising as ever, he found considerable difficulty securing backing for his ambitious projects. Unsure he would be able to film it, the director, an aspiring artist before he entered filmmaking, converted Kagemusha into a series of paintings, and it was partly on the basis of these that he won the financial support of longtime admirers Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. Set in the 16th century, when powerful warlords competed for control of Japan, it offers an examination of the nature of political power and the slipperiness of identity. For some time, Shingen Takeda (Tatsuya Nakadai) has been able to stay removed from the heat of battle by using his brother Nobukado (Tsutomu Yamazaki) as a double. As the film opens, Nobukado offers another option, having discovered a condemned thief (also played by Tatsuya Nakadai) bearing an uncanny resemblance to the warlord. After he insists on witnessing the fall of an enemy in person, Shingen falls victim to a sniper’s bullet, forcing his advisers to present the thief as the fallen warrior. At first awkward in his new position and plagued by dreams in which the spirit of his double confronts him, he slowly grows into the role even as his enemies begin to advance on his kingdom. The winner of the Palm D’Or at Cannes, Kagemusha: The Shadow Warrior has also been released as The Double. ~ Keith Phipps @allmovie.com

Extras:
• Audio commentary by Kurosawa scholar Stephen Prince (The Warrior’s Camera: The Cinema of Akira Kurosawa) included as track 2 on the film

John Hayes – Baby Rosemary (1976)

$

Baby Rosemary follows a sexually suppressed young woman (Sharon Thorpe) through her sexual journeys with her friend John, her student athletes and the residents of her father’s hotel residence. The real turning point for Rosemary seems to be when she is attacked in her father’s room by a despicable couple who live across the hall and raped by both the man and woman. Cut to several years later and John has matured enough to become a policeman and has to track down Rosemary to inform her of the news of her father’s death. Rosemary never really knew her father as she was put up in an orphanage when her mother died. Rosemary brings her sexually charged students to the viewing and they end up sleeping with the funeral director. This all leads to a surreal, dreamlike gathering of everyone Rosemary knows (plus a weird demon guy) having an orgy in the funeral home right next to her deceased father forcing Rosemary into her own personal hell as she screams for her father to save her.

Quote:
Troubled and sexually repressed Rosemary (a solid and touching performance by Sharon Thorpe) has serious issues with her estranged father abandoning her as a little girl at an orphanage. Rosemary neglects the carnal needs of her fed-up boyfriend John (well played by John Leslie), so John turns to prostitute Unis (Lesllie Bovee at her most brash and insanely desirable) to satisfy his lascivious desires. In the wake of her father’s passing, Rosemary sinks into a deep depression and finds herself caught up in a surreal erotic nightmare world of sex and death.

Director John Hayes does an ace job of crafting an extremely gloomy and melancholy tone while maintaining a steady pace throughout. The daring and offbeat script by Ruth Price and Virgil Rome boldly explores the dark and disturbing themes of misogyny, necrophilia, and severe sexual repression with genuinely haunting and poignant results. The tip-top cast of 70’s hardcore cinema regulars help a lot: Candida Royalle and Melba Bruce as members of a bizarre sex/death cult, Ken Scudder as sleazy and disgusting abusive jerk Mick, and Monique Cardin as the wicked Kate. The sex scenes are quite intense and kinky, with the climactic wild’n’weird orgy at a funeral parlor rating as the definite scorching highlight. Both the moody score and the pretty cinematography are up to speed. This film is bizarre and midnight movie fans need to see it.

Renato Polselli – Rivelazioni Di Uno Psichiatra Sul Mondo Perverso Del Sesso AKA Revelations of a Psychiatrist in a World of Perverse Sex (1973)

IMDB
Very rare XXX mondo-style film in which a psychiatrist explains to his students several stories of sexual deviants. Each vignette begins with the doctor citing a fact-based newspaper/magazine story of abhorrent sexual behavior.ALLMOVIE
Cult horror director Renato Polselli filmed this extremely sleazy mondo-style documentary under the pseudonym “Ralph Brown.” Isarco Ravaioli portrays a supposedly well-known sex researcher who lectures the audience on the theories of Freud and Krafft-Ebing while introducing fairly graphic depictions of orgies, rape, homosexuality, prostitution, transvestism, necrophilia, and even canine bestiality. Despite its laughable narration, this film is quite strong in tone, and is recommended for only the hardiest of viewers.

Peter Watkins – Fritänkaren aka The Freethinker (1994)

$

Quote:
“This is Peter Watkins (epic) companion-piece to his highly acclaimed “Edvard Munch” (1974). “The Freethinker” examines the life, art, and times of the noted Swedish dramatist August Strindberg, author of Miss Julie, Inferno, and Dance of Death. Strindberg is depicted as a rebel, and idealistic and controversial iconoclast who openly criticized the hypocrisy of 19th century society.” (p. back cover) The film broadly focuses on 3 aspects of Strindberg’s life- the impact of his childhood on his psychology and future work; the meaning of his relationship with his first wife, and the way in which Strindberg, as an author, created works that confronted the social injustices of their time.

“This is a unique, complex and truly collaborative project, which focuses much on Strindberg’s often turbulent relationship with his first wife, Siri Von Essen, was based on original and detailed research carried out by Peter Watkins and produced as part of a full length video production course at the Nordens Folkhogskola Biskops-Arno (a film school in Sweden), taking two years to complete (after Wakins had worked for 2 and a half years on research and scriptwriting). The students raised all the funds, sewed all the costumes, learned to operate the equipment and performed all the functions involved in s major theatrical video production.” (p. back cover)

Watkins has organized the film with slow-paced editing in order to to maximize the viewers ability to ponder and reflect on what is portrayed in the film (a direct counter to the fast paced editing and organization of popular cultural texts, “which are designed for maximum manipulation and minimum time for reflection” (p. 4)). Structured non-linearly, Watkins has weaved the 3 elements of Strindberg’s life together, along with juxtapositions of photos, letters, and excerpts from his texts, with hopes of, “highlighting the complexity of Strindberg’s life, and the meaning of the seeming contradictions in his work.” (p. 5) This, Watkins hopes, will enable the viewer to not only learn about Strindberg’s life and influence, but also foster critical thought about the state of the mass media and popular culture- as Strindberg’s works did for his own time.

Watkins has thus heeded the calls of Screen Theorists and has sought to revolutionize the process film production itself, by making it a truly collective, grassroots, collaborative project made almost entirely with non-professional cast and crew members with no previous experience.

Accompanying this DVD is a 16 page booklet which includes a letter-essay that Watkins had written to 70 different high schools and teacher training colleges around Sweden, with hopes that it would clarify some of the more broad social and political implications that the film may influence.

Watkins claims to have includedd this letter as it is felt that he has been socially and politically marginalized by the mainstream media- especially in regards to his discussion surrounding the “crisis of the mass media”- and thus does not want, nor trust, how mainstream journalists and critics interpret and criticize his work. The following statement is included in the “Copyright statement” in the booklet: “With the advancement of globalization and the professional marginalization of Peter Watkins work- especially his critical writings – have increased. This has manifested itself by journalists removing any critical references made by Peter himself (e.g. in an interview) and only quoting his comments about creative and production matters. Even when journalists do include comments made by Peter Watkins, re the crisis of the mass media or the political meaning of his own work, these elements are nearly always reduced or removed entirely by copy editors. The result is inevitably an unbalanced article, devoid of any political or critical context.

As a result of these and many other problems, Peter Watkins no longer gives interviews of any kind. His practice is now to prepare texts on his films in which he tries to cover as many creative and critical elements as possible, based on questions he has been asked in the past.” (p. 1)

When the Tokugawa Shogunate ruled the land, Tatsuno castle in Wakisaka Clan’s home of Harima held an established custom, the inspection of the arms warehouse. The Government Inspector Okuno Magodayu found a slight bit of dirt on the point of a spear and mentioned it with disdain. Ezaki Shinpachi heard it and started an argument with him. A woman working in the municipal toilet recalls her youth. Colourful images of life in the countryside, first love, lancers intertwine with a gloomy image of reality. The film is the diploma work by Roman Polański.

A church bell chimes. An old woman stops to feed pidgins on her way to work in the men’s lavatory in the basement of a public building. She sits all day by the lavatory door as little dramas play out — of illness, assignation, and routine — a few tips her only acknowledgment. The sound of footsteps on the floor above her brings a reverie of her youth, when she was a beauty, the day a platoon of soldiers marched into her valley. As the day in the basement proceeds, she completes a set of memories that takes her from passion to maternal love to rejection and tragedy. Could there be more awaiting her on this day of remembering the fruit of her womb?

Set in a tight-knit, extremely conservative island community off the Southern coast of Iran where all women wear burkas, this film begins as an investigation into the suicide of a woman named Samireh. Her husband callously says that while he cares about the lives of his kids, women’s lives are cheap. However, the women the director Oskouei interviews – many of whom were married off at age 12 or 13 – stand up for themselves and discuss their difficult existences. Oskouei relies mostly on close-up or medium-shot interviews, and as usual, displays his gift for framing people dynamically in tight spaces.
