Yigong Wu & Yonggang Wu – Cheng nan jiu shi AKA My memories of old Beijing (1983)

My Memories of Old Beijing is a Chinese movie based on the novel of the same name written by Lin Haiyin which was published in 1960. The movie showed the customs and sceneries of the old Beijing in a reminiscent mood. It was the winner of the third Golden Rooster for Best Director, Best Music and Best Supporting Actress in 1983.

In this look back on the 1930s when Beijing (“northern capital”) was spelled Peking, when Mao and the Kuomingtang were fighting, and Japanese forces were making inroads on Chinese soil, a Taiwanese-born woman remembers the difficult times. She recalls how children were sold off by their poverty-stricken parents, how students were killed by the police, and how people stole to survive. But against this background is a romantic love affair that flourishes in spite of the decade’s many crises. This film won the top prize at the 1983 Manila Film Festival, although for many Western viewers, its characters may seem one-dimensional. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

We see and experience her love, dedication to her masters, mysticism, exile, betrayal and faith, while the Dry Valley is falling to pieces, slowly but inevitably, as well as the lives of its inhabitants.

Stephen Frears – My Beautiful Laundrette (1985)

$

Quote:
‘LAUNDRETTE,’ SOCIAL COMEDY SLEEPER
DON’T be put off by the title, which makes it sound like a failed French farce. ”My Beautiful Laundrette,” written by Hanif Kureishi and directed by Stephen Frears, is the first real sleeper of the year.

The film, which opens today at the Embassy 72d Street Theater, is a rude, wise, vivid social comedy about Pakistani immigrants in London, , particularly about the initially naive, university-age Omar (Gordon Warnecke) and Omar’s extended family of wheeler-dealers and unassimilated layabouts.

”Take my advice,” says Omar’s Uncle Nasser (Saeed Jaffrey) early in the film, ”there’s money in muck.” Omar heeds his uncle and enlists the aid of Johnny (Daniel Day Lewis), a Cockney mate from his school days. Together, Omar and Johnny set out to revitalize ”Churchill’s,” a failing laundromat, owned by Nasser, in a seedy section of London where enthusiastic, hustling immigrants are at odds with alienated, disenfranchised natives.

Like the film itself, the relationship between Omar and Johnny is not quite as simple as it initially seems. Both men are outsiders. In the years since he and Omar were first friends, Johnny has drifted from one jobless limbo to the next. When Omar meets him again, Johnny is affecting a punk haircut and, with his pals, bashing Pakistanis, mostly because there’s nothing better to do.

It gradually becomes clear why Johnny has agreed to give up his street life to join Omar, who, being a Pakistani, isn’t easily explained to his Cockney pals. Johnny is bored with his own aimlessness. He never quite admits it, but he’d like to get ahead in the world. Further, and most important, he’s in love with Omar, something that Omar responds to and, like the hustler he’s becoming, uses to his own advantage.

”My Beautiful Laundrette,” however, is much more than a comedy about a couple of male lovers who go into the laundromat business. It’s about Omar’s father (Roshan Seth), a successful journalist in Pakistan but who in England, where he has raised his son, spends all day in bed drinking vodka and railing against the system. ”Oh, dear,” he might say in his fastidious, upper-class accent, ”the working class is a great disappointment to me.”

It’s also about Uncle Nasser’s most proud possession – his English mistress, Rachel (Shirley Anne Field), a tarty, good-hearted woman who genuinely loves Nasser; Nasser’s furiously jealous Pakistani wife (Charu Bala Choksi), who finally resorts to witchcraft (which works), and Tania (Rita Wolf), Nasser’s pretty daughter who feels neither Pakistani nor English.

Had ”My Beautiful Laundrette” been written by anybody but the London-born Mr. Kureishi, whose father was Pakistani and mother was English, the film would possibly seem racist. He’s merciless to his Pakistani characters, especially to Omar. However, he’s merciless in the way of someone who creates characters so complex they can’t be easily categorized as good or bad.

The film’s most sympathetic as well as most stubbornly faithful characters are English. Johnny is a man of almost unbelievable patience and reserves of decency – qualities that Mr. Lewis realizes in a performance that has both extraordinary technical flash and emotional substance. It’s Mr. Kureishi’s comic paradox that his upper-class Pakistani immigrants have become the exploiters in a land that once exploited them.

Mr. Warnecke, whose first film role this is, is wonderfully insidious as Omar. Also fine are Mr. Jaffrey, recently seen in both ”Gandhi” and ”A Passage to India,” and Mr. Seth, who played Nehru in ”Gandhi.”

Mr. Frears made his theatrical film debut as a director 15 years ago with Albert Finney’s ”Gumshoe,” a cheerful sendup of private-eye movies. Since then he has made only ”The Hit,” which was not a hit, apparently preferring to work in television, for which ”My Beautiful Laundrette” was originally intended. That ”My Beautiful Laundrette” could have been conceived as a film for the small screen describes – better than anything else I can think of – the vast difference between American and English television.

”My Beautiful Laundrette” has the broad scope and the easy pace that one associates with our best theatrical films. It puts its own truth above the fear of possibly offending someone. Without showing off, it has courage as well as artistry. There are moments when key narrative points are obscure, and when characters behave in a way that has been dictated not by plausibility but the effect it will create. Toward the end, it threatens to fly apart.

It doesn’t. ”My Beautiful Laundrette” is a fascinating, eccentric, very personal movie.

John Frankenheimer – Birdman of Alcatraz (1962)

AMG:
Burt Lancaster sits comfortably in his manly yet sensitive mode as Robert Stroud, and director John Frankenheimer gives him an easy road to absolution. The film manages to stay interesting despite being locked for the most part inside a jail cell. In what has to be his best movie role (outside of perhaps The Dirty Dozen), Telly Savalas brings a lot to the proceedings as a jail mate of Stroud’s. Thelma Ritter, a consistently underrated character actress, is also notable as Stroud’s mother. As Hollywood went through a significant transition in the mid-Sixties, Frankenheimer helped to reshape the action-thriller genre with a string of exciting, intelligent, and successful movies with a distinct political awareness: The Manchurian Candidate, Seven Days in May, The Train, Seconds, and The Fixer were all made in a six-year period after The Birdman from Alcatraz.

Filmed in Hanoi on December 13, 1966, this documentary records the lives of people in the Vietnam capital and surrounding countryside at the height of U.S. bombing. “One of Alvarez’s indisputable masterpieces, this is a film of great sensitivity. It also displays the greatest integrity and is constructed with the greatest economy of means… Although the means are of the simplest, the editing is exceedingly subtle. The narrative line is there, yet it’s anything but linear. The result is that the film informs in a way quite alien to what documentary orthodoxy has taught us to expect.”

Brillante Mendoza – Serbis AKA Service (2008)

Plot:
A drama that follows the travails of the Pineda family in the Filipino city of Angeles. Bigamy, unwanted pregnancy, possible incest and bothersome skin irritations are all part of their daily challenges, but the real “star” of the show is an enormous, dilapidated movie theater that doubles as family business and living space. At one time a prestige establishment, the theater now runs porn double bills and serves as a meeting ground for hustlers of every conceivable persuasion. The film captures the sordid, fetid atmosphere, interweaving various family subplots with the comings and goings of customers, thieves and even a runaway goat while enveloping the viewer in a maelstrom of sound, noise and continuous motion.

Quote:
“one of the highlights of the (Cannes) festival. Shooting inside a beautiful Art Deco theatre, Mendoza not only shows a flair for evoking its strange and glamorous interiors, but offers high-end soap opera, at once nuanced, funny and melancholic, about this religion-soaked, sexually ambiguous world governed by sad-eyed matriarchs.”

Will Benedict, David Leonard – Toilets Not Temples (2014)

$

0

Toilets Not Temples, a film by David Leonard and Will Benedict, mixes different styles of narrative storytelling such as live journal (rehearsing the breaking news over and over again), news anchor (reporting on catastrophes as if the reporter was reading lottery numbers), and rap video (does anyone ever listen to the lyrics?), only to mention the most important ones. These are wrapped in a (post)apocalyptic film narrative. A narrative that, despite the dominant trend in feature films that must have an end-of-times scenario, finishes with a five-minute scene of a jubilant crowd somewhere in India—celebrating the end of food shortage and the volunteers’ (who fall from the sky) success in containing a spread of giant rats.First and foremost, Toilets Not Temples deals with the distribution of food. In this process it makes a rather anecdotal, almost obscure connection between Norway—where I live—and India. I grew up in the Lofoten islands, Northern Norway, a place where the fish industry in the early seventies started using net pens (sic) to farm salmon. Lofoten is also the place for the world’s largest season-wise cod fishery. This activity has been going on for at least 600 years, and for the last 400 years most of the caught fish is dried or half dried, and sold to Italy or Portugal. Distribution has always been a problem. In the earlier times, fishermen would row in small, family-owned boats. But the production of dried cod was done by few companies. In years of fish shortage there was also food shortage for the families that lived from fishing, as they could not afford to buy food. The current Indian onion distribution faces a similar problem, it has remained unchanged for centuries, largely independent of modern methods. The Indian wine is portrayed as another problem, as Indians know little of wine. It is all about distribution of produced goods.
The post-apocalyptic, sci-fi part of Toilets Not Temples is established in the very beginning of the film. The film begins with a powerful, dynamic soundtrack and a shot that could just as well been the opening scene of a Hollywood a, b, c or d movie. We are in a high-rise, watching the city below through a large window. In the middle ground there is a silhouette of a man (logically darkened so that what’s outside the window does not burn out, a known quality of lens-based works). The soundtrack strongly suggests that something is about to happen. And it starts raining men. Hundreds, if not thousands of them. Most of the remaining post-apocalyptic parts of the film take place in relation to the news anchor who introduced a water shortage, a fictitious chemical compound (Metho Ciclo Hexa Methanal [MCHD]), tracking systems for fish (developed by KODE in Bergen), giant rats, and genetically-modified crows, endowed with human heads.

Large parts of the film play out as a journalistic piece with a twist. In an early segment we see the journalist reporting from vineyards in Nashik, India. At first everything is as expected. The journalist, emphatic and likable, informs us that we’re “not in northern California or South of France”, just before he stops talking and starts over. He then pauses, and tells his cameraman that this part will go to the sound bite. “This is in-between”, the journalist says, before being abruptly cut out of from the image, reappearing from the right to continue his story. This is to point out the creation of a narrative, which of course storytelling does. But, the in-between and the sound bite hint towards journalistic ethics, about contextualization and angle (of a piece). This is also visible elsewhere in the journalistic part of the film, e.g.the usage of eye witnesses/experts. These get only a few seconds, maybe half a minute, to cover their opinion. It’s impossible to cover all angles in depth during a normal journalistic piece, and the film points out the usage of easily adaptable, quick-fix, seemingly knowledge covering journalism. A strange and nice connection between the fictitious and the real appears in the woman with a dolphin head (might be seen as an alternative way to hide the identity of someone) and the above-mentioned genetically-modified crow with human head.

Out-takes
– The title of the film is paraphrasing a quote by Narendra Modi, India’s current Prime Minister, something he said during his campaign in 2013 (“build toilets first and temples later”).

– In his lecture “The Anthropocene as a potential new unit of the Geological Time Scale”, Jan Zalasiewicz argues for a new geological epoch where humans influence on earth (and thus nature) are uncontroversial. He points out that what we produce have a profound impact. Our impact on nature is larger now than ever before. In Toilets Not Temples the main focus is food, and the distribution of food.

The Well-Digger’s Daughter served to reunite star Raimu and writer/director Marcel Pagnol, who’d earlier scored an international hit with the “Marseilles trilogy” (Fanny, Marius, Cesar). The title character played by Josette Day, is impregnated by aviator George Gray. Her father, Raimu, orders Josette out of the house so that her younger sisters won’t be likewise “corrupted”. There’s many a moment of pathos and hilarity before Raimu realizes the folly of his behavior. Filmed in 1940, just after France’s acquiescence to their Nazi conquerors, The Well-Digger’s Daughter didn’t make it to the US until 1946. (Hal Erickson@All Movie Guide)
