This film is a series of letters, photos and video cassettes which women often send in to certain newspapers. By visualizing their story-telling (the name given by the psychologists to their fantasies) the film portrays the confessions, the secret longings, the adventures, recollections, dreams, desires and fantasies of these women. It is an open secret that most women dream of forbidden affairs, secret lovers and hasty encounters but when it comes down to it they lack the courage to pursue their dreams.

Robert Asher – The Early Bird (1965)

Daniel Schmid – Das geschriebene Gesicht AKA The Written Face (1995)

In Japanese theater women’s roles are traditionally played by men. The man playing the woman’s role, the Onnagata, does not imitate the woman, as in the West, but tries to capture her significance. He need not stick close to his model, but draws far more from his own identity – a shift of value takes place, which is nonetheless not a step beyond.

THE WRITTEN FACE is an attempt to offer an insight into the Japanese Kabuki star Tamasaburo Bando, one of the last defenders of this ancient and disappearing performing tradition. The film consists of four continuous acts:

A prelude, the dance of the drunken snake “Orochi”, from Japan’s oldest myth, is followed by a documentary section, “Tamasaburo Bando and his idols.” It includes encounters with geisha and dancer Han Takehara, film actress Haruko Sugimura and Butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno.

Haruko Sugimura worked with Ozu and Naruse during the flowering of Japanese cinema. The Geisha Han Takehara was for many years the greatest dancer in Japan, although she was only known to a small circle of clients and only in later years appeared in public, already a legend.

The next act, “Twilight Geisha,” is a light-hearted variation on the geisha theme. In the fourth and final section, Tamasaburo dances the Kabuki drama “Sagimusume,” a story of reincarnation and of a girl’s transformation on a snowy winter’s night.

THE WRITTEN FACE reverberates in an echo-chamber of signs, where the alteration of a face also implies a shift of value. It seeks to show these shifts of value and cracks in the mask, in the written face, to reveal some significant images of the kabuki world, and to allow us to experience this world, however partially.

Fernando León de Aranoa – Familia AKA Family (1996 )

On the day of his birthday, Santiago (Juan Luiz Galiardo) hires a team of actors and actresses to play as if they were members of his family. Along the day, the personality and sentiments of each member of his fake family is disclosed to the viewer, showing their true feelings. This weird and surrealistic story is a great metaphor with the real society. In a simple way, it can be understood as a powerful and lonely man, who somehow misses his family and hires a group of actors and actresses to perform, on the day of his birthday, as if they were his lost family, as a kind of weird celebration. This type of interpretation leads the viewer to a great review of the hypocrisy of the institution `family’. But if we extend this idea further and further, the lonely and rich man might be a government, a powerful dictator, an employer, a manager, trying to build his own perfect world, represented by his family. However, even though providing all the instructions, orders, good conditions and salaries for the participants, his world may not work the way he wants. Human beings are not machines: they may use masks, hiding their real feelings, following a social behavior ruled by the society or the system. But in the end, persons have free will and even flaws in their characters and behaviors and the system may not work perfectly as planned. In the end, Santiago applauds the great performance of the players and concludes that it is better off be part of an imperfect `family’ (could be the world, the society etc.) than to live alone (or be dead…)

Helke Sander – Der Subjektive Faktor (1981)

“What were the beginnings of the new women’s movement like?”, “What was life like in a commune?”, “What were discussions like?” The Film reconstructs in 1980 events that took place between 1967 and 1970.
I was also always interested in what would have happened if certain people had acted differently, or not at all, at given points in time; that is to say, what influence do individuals, “the subjective factor”, actually have on historical events? Do people’s individualities encourage or inhibit each other? How do their activities affect the general public? In 1980 this was a very unpopular question.
The film features a character called Anni, a woman living with her child in a commune, and through her transmits a sense of how a movement emerges, how it supplies answers to the many new questions Anni faces, and given her the impression of a new departure before eventually disintegrating into dogma.

Synopsis:
A young girl, rich and orphaned (Emmy LYNN), harrassed by a deprived adventurer (Jean TOULOUT) and by his sister, kills the latter. The adventurer blackmails her. A year later, the girl marries a famous composer, an admiror of Beethoven (Séverin MARS). The adventurer starts courting, secretly, the composer’s daughter (Elizabeth NIZAN) – daughter by a previous marriage. The composer, on finding out that a sordid relationship had existed, in the past, between his wife and the adventurer wrote, on the occasion of his daughter’s engagement, a symphony describing his unhappiness. The composer hereby defines the theme of the 10th symphony: “At the feet of his master Beethoven , a musician distraught by the treason of women, tries to forget and express his sadness”.

This extraordinary melodramatic scenario gave the ambitious Abel GANCE, the opportunity to translate human sentiments, passions and exasperations, by a succession of dazzling sequences (all the scenes are materially remarkable, often very inventive, and carry their theme of tragedy with tumultuous music).

Federico Fellini – I Clowns (1971)

$

SYNOPSIS
The Clowns is part drama, part fantasy, part pseudo-documentary, and all about the mind of Federico Fellini. Even only having gathered bits along the way, I am aware of Fellini’s penchant for clowns, circuses, grotesqueries, and the absurd. The Clowns is his way of exploring this one corner of his mind and why clowns and the circus had such a great hold on people in the 20th century. This is a phenomenon which saw its greatest heights in the 20th century, after all, the art of clowning is less admired now than it once was.

As much as The Clowns is a film about clowns, it is about Fellini. His obsession with clowns goes back to his childhood, and we see this reflected in the first scene of the film, in which a young boy awakens in the middle of the night to find a circus tent being erected at his front door. When the boy first enters the big top, he is confronted by the maddeningly frantic actions of the clowns, their faces painted white and brown, and he is not gladdened, but frightened, at their appearance. As the film progresses, it switches back and forth between the story, told in clown acts, of this circus, and the story of a documentary being made by Fellini about clowns, which is all staged.

The documentary within the story shows Fellini and a skeleton crew visiting various major circuses of Europe as well as various retired clowns and their kin to find out what made them who they were. This portion of the film is rather propulsive, and despite its obviously scripted nature, many parts of it feel very natural. The impromptu performance of an old clown on his guitar is very charming and leaves both the participants in the film, and we, as viewers, endeared to this man who seemingly hasn’t lost his touch. One can tell that this is a passion project for Fellini, his heart is in it, and it feels very personal.

The clowning portions of the film, strangely, are some of the tougher parts to get through. There is very little narrative push through the film, however, we do make some minor emotional connections with the clowns. Without dialogue, the film does not flow as nicely as it should. Fellini appears to be attempting to recreate the feeling of being in the circus tent with the action, but it just doesn’t translate very well, and several of these sequences feel a bit indulgent. The shot-to-shot editing is very fast paced, but the scenes go on for a (necessarily) long time in order to watch the acts build and climax. The only one with which I was truly enamored was the final act, which was longer than all of the others, but full of kinetic energy and madness in a way that the other acts weren’t. The final twenty minutes of the film are truly engaging and exciting.

On the whole, the film is a tough one to parse. The documentary segments are very interesting, but more inviting if one has a rudimentary understanding of clowns and clowning history; while the fantasy segments suffer from their own indulgence. The combination of the two makes this a very interesting film, but not necessarily a terribly entertaining one the first time around. I actually went back and watched most of it a second time after sifting through the excellent extras and found it much more engaging. If you want to see The Clowns, Raro Video’s disc is the way to go.
