Quote:
A series of 19 musical and comedy “vaudeville” sketches presented in the form of a live broadcast hosted by Tommy Handley (as himself). There are two “running gags” which connect the sketches. In one, an actor wants to perform Shakespeare, but he is continually denied air-time. The other gag has an inventor trying to view the broadcast on television. Four of the sketches are in color (in shades of yellow and brown only).

Kongo is writing a book on the subject of immigrants but while his editor wants a kind of traveler’s book in which ethnic exotic ingredients are offered to a European audience, Kongo has more ambitious ideas – he conceives of the idea of writing a book that follows the paths of Congolese history and its many ghosts. A brave and powerful film, made with single-mind integrity. Filmed mainly in the Congo, the film also provides a slice of life of the contemporary Congolese community in Brussels.

Akira Kurosawa – Nora inu AKA Stray Dog (1949)

Quote:
Stray Dog is an intense criminal story that examines the psychology of the characters as in compares the similarities between criminals and detectives. These similarities are balanced on a thin line based on choice, which Kurosawa dissects studiously through the camera lens. Kurosawa’s investigation of the character’s psychology creates a spiraling suspense that is enhanced through subtle surprises and brilliant cinematography. The camera use often displays shots through thin cloths, close ups, and new camera angles, which also makes the film aesthetically appealing. When Kurosawa brings together camera work and cast performance, among other cinematic aspects, he leaves the audience with a brilliantly suspenseful criminal drama, which leaves much room for introspection and retrospection.

Quote:
The 3 Part of the Maiku Hama Triology is the best and probably darkest of all the films. In fact, this episode is more of a horror-like thriller reminiscent of a Takashi Miike film. “The Trap,” which is the final film of the trilogy was preceded by the more semi-comical episodes of “The Most Terrible Time In My Life,” and then followed by “Stairway To The Distant Past,” and finally concluding with this film, “The Trap.” In the previous episodes of the trilogy, Maiku Hama (Masatoshi Nagase) is not the aloof private detective he was originally portrayed as; but a much more intelligent and calm detective.

Various – Lian hua jiao xiang qu AKA Symphony of Lianhua (1937)

“The Lianhua Film Company became the leading progressive studio of the 1930s. Symphony of Lianhua 1937 is a rarely seen showcase of short films by eight directors, many of whom later worked in Hong Kong. Cai Chusheng’s Five Little Brothers is an early cinematic exploration of children’s lives and Zhu Shilin’s contribution is one of the first Chinese horror films. Other films range from comedy to social realism. Fei Mu’s evocation of a young girl’s dreams parallels German Expressionist explorations and is his only surviving short film — only four of his films are still in existence, although he made almost 20. Fei Mu went on to direct Springtime in a Small Town 1948, a masterpiece of psychological cinema considered one of the greatest Chinese films of all time, then moved to Hong Kong in 1949. In Si-Tu Huimin’s Two Mao, a portrait of the disparity between rich and poor in Shanghai, Jiang Qing (later, Mao’s wife) plays a small part. She later had the film withdrawn from circulation as she did not wish people to know she had acted in Shanghai before the war.”

Plot:
One of Paramount’s funniest films of the forties is this Preston Sturges screwball classic staring Betty Hutton (The Greatest Show on Earth) and Eddie Bracken (Hail the Conquering Hero.) Hutton is Trudy Kockenlocker, a small-town gal who feels it is her patriotic duty to dance the night away with soldiers who are headed oversees.

But after too many glasses of “victory lemonade,” Trudy jitterbugs right into a chandelier – and awakens the next morning to find a mysterious wedding ring on her finger, and no recollection of her new “husband”! That’s when she decides to find a quick, surrogate spouse and sets her sights on her lovelorn, childhood friend, Norval Jones (Bracken). This frantic, audacious comedy hit landed Sturges a 1944 Academy Award® nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Robert Morin – Que Dieu Bénisse l’Amérique AKA May God Bless America (2006)

This comedo-dramatic exploration of the human condition follows its characters through a single high stress day, coincidentally pitting issues of child abuse and serial homicide against those of loneliness and estrangement.

Masao Adachi & Haruhiko Arai – Funshutsu kigan – 15-sai no baishunfu AKA Gushing Prayer: A 15-Year-Old Prostitute (1971)

$

Synopsis:
A young prostitute tries to understand why she suffers from melancholy and benumbed feelings. Against a background of sexual liberation and political subversion, this latest libertine work by radical film director M. Adachi is one of the very few existing feminist erotic films. Masao Adachi’s personality and films deserve careful consideration. Relatively unknown as yet to Western audiences, he happens to be one of the most radical film-makers around in recent years. Gushing Prayer, shows the influence of Koji Wakamatsu, another enfant terrible of Japanese cinema whom Adachi assisted on many films. Gushing Prayer does not hesitate to show the resentments and dissatisfactions of someone who ought to be nothing more than an object of fantasies. Highly pertinent, with a bold avant-garde style, he sets the record straight as far as the sexual desires of supposedly liberated Japanese women are concerned. One of the rare feminist films of the 70’s, it audaciously evokes sexual liberation and political subversion.

Laida Lertxundi – Laida Lertxundi complete filmography (2004-2018)

Laida Lertxundi is a Spanish filmmaker

Quote:
“I was really into music and photography and art in general growing up. Not really so much into film. I wasn’t drawn to narrative film, and I hadn’t seen any other kind growing up in the Basque Country.”- Laida Lertxundi

1. 025 Sunset Red (2016)- (SILENT VERSION) Laida Lertxundi continues her exploration of the American West with the intimately scaled 025 Sunset Red, which folds in autobiography as she looks back to her parents’ radical activism in Spain.

2. Cry When It Happens (2010)- Los Angeles City Hall is reflected onto the window of the Paradise Motel. It serves as an anchor for this traversal through the natural expanse of California. Here, we discover a restrained psychodrama of play, loss, and the transformation of everyday habitats. Music appears across the interiors and exteriors and speaks of limitlessness and longing.

3. Footnotes to a House of Love (2007)- A series of shots in a California desert landscape in which there is a play between on frame and off frame, sound and image. There is an effort to create the space of a story, without a story, by the use of real time/diegetic sound. Love is felt as a force that determines the arrangement of the figures in the landscape.

4. Words, Planets (2018)- This film applies the six principles for composition delineated in ‘Opinions on Painting by the Monk of the Green Pumpkin’, written by the eighteenth-century Chinese painter Shih-T’ao as referenced in Raúl Ruíz’s essay For a Shamanic Cinema (for example, ‘draw attention to a scene emerging from a static background’ or ‘add scattered dynamism to immobility’). The film is composed of scenes with non-actors, and texts by R.D.Laing and Lucy Lippard. Filmed and recorded in Habana, Cuba; Los Angeles; Devil’s Punch Bowl; Ryan Mountain; Jurupa Hills, Pasadena and Idyllwild, California.

5. Live to Live (2015)- “The body, a space of production, creates structures for a film.”—Laida Lertxundi.

6. The Room Called Heaven (2012)- American plains and high altitudes assembled in a B-roll structure take us to a place of sounds*. Plans américains show color and temperature shifts while an emotional room tone is sustained for the length of a 400ft camera roll.

7. We Had the Experience but Missed the Meaning (2014)- Crossing desert and sea, screen and page, between Los Angeles and San Diego, and a moment in a story by Adolfo Bioy Casares.

8. Utskor: Either/Or (2013)- In the town of Utskor in the region of Bø, northern Norway, we find memories of a political past intertwining with domestic, familial moments during the midnight sun.

9. My Tears Are Dry (2009)- A film in the three parts of a dialectic. Hoagy Land’s song is played and interrupted as guitar makes sound, two women, a bed an armchair, and the beautiful outside. After Bruce Baillie’s All My Life. The lyrics of the song reference the eternal sunshine of California and its promises.

10. A Lax Riddle Unit (2011)- In a Los Angeles interior, moving walls for loss. Practicing a song to a loved one. A film of the feminine structuring body.

11. Farce Sensationelle! (2004)- Spanish experimental short

Wasted Youth is set during a hot summer day in Athens. A sixteen-year-old skater and his friends are amusing themselves in the big city. A middle-aged man struggles to take care of his family, through work that he hates and mounting stress. Their lives intersect in this contemporary portrait of the city of Athens and a society in crisis.
The film deliberately avoids factual accuracy, instead telling a fictional story. Wasted Youth is above all a film about the city of Athens, which is teetering on the brink of a nervous breakdown.

Film is dedicated to the ontological problems of adaptation of the human spirit in the mental world.
Quote:
In his films, Kobrin elaborates a special, metaphoric style that is “a fully achieved work of imaginative filmmaking, in which special effects, pixilation, and reverse or speed-up motion abound, a philosophical avant-garde film, entirely unexpected in terms of its country of origin”.

“The cinema I’m engaged in can be called ‘phychedelic puppet action’, where the characters-both the live and the lifeless-behave according to the laws of a cosmic theater . . . To my mind, an artist is a person whose mission is to close the space between Earth and the Cosmos. Otherwise he can’t be called an artist. That is why I see my task as a film director to consist of wiping off the mirror in which man and mankind as a whole look, and to show that this world (this performance without God, that is, without the point where all our puppet threads come together) is senseless and deserves no sympathy or pity.” – Vladimir Kobrin

In the West Vladimir Kobrin is considered a father of Russian avant-garde scientific filmmaking. He was frequently invited to European film-schools with lectures (Cologne, Potsdam, Copenhagen, etc.) and in 1997 he received an invitation from Harvard University Film Achieve. Special retrospectives of his films were shown at Pesaro Festival in Italy and in Montreal in 1998.

Kobrin’s work was never officially published and did not come out in the original. The artistic heritage of Kobrin – one of the mysteries of modern cinema.
