Plot:
In spring 1938 in the mountains in the north of Chile a fiery UFO, later named “Chilean Sphere “, fell down. The investigation of this episode, made by a film crew, has led to a sensational discovery. It appeared that before the Second World War (in the thirties) in the USSR a secret space program had been developed. The Soviet scientists and military authorities managed to launch the first spacecraft 23 years prior to Jury Gagarin’s flight! “The First on the Moon” tells about everyday life, heroic deeds and tragedy of the first group of the Soviet cosmonauts. It is the first Russian film shot in a very rare genre ‘mockumentary’ or ‘documentary fiction’.

Andrzej Wajda’s Krajobraz po bitwie / Landscape After the Battle was a ground-breaking film discussing the personal stories of the inmates of a WW-II camp. The film also draws inspiration from one of Poland’s most iconic paintings.

The screenplay was mainly based on Tadeusz Borowski’s story, Bitwa pod Grunwaldem / The Battle for Grunwald, as well as, to a lesser extent, on a few other stories by the author. The authors of the script were – Andrzej Brzozowski, the co-writer of, among others, Pasażerka by Andrzej Munk and a known film documentarian, as well as Andrzej Wajda.

The film’s protagonist – just like in the original story by Borowski – is a former concentration-camp prisoner, Tadeusz (Tadek) – a poet and intellectual, and a young Jewish girl, Nina. The action takes place after the end of the war, in a displaced persons camp, where former inmate of concentration camps resided temporarily following the end of the war. Tadek, a prisoner who has been in the camp for a long time, has seen all the atrocities one person can do to another. He falls in love with Nina. This love blooms among the beautiful and thrilling autumn surroundings.

There is another artistic layer in the background. It is the famed painting by Jan Matejko Bitwa pod Grunwaldem (The Battle for Grunwald) being recreated by the Poles residing in the camp. The film, therefore, has two points, the intimate one – the relationship of Tadeusz and Nina, and the political one – the inmates’ attitude towards the new Poland, where the dilemma is all about whether to return to Poland or stay in the free world. Autumn of 1945 is not a time of national consent and each character has his or her own opinion of the matter, often one which is hurtful to others.

In 1909, Emiliano Zapata, a well-born but penniless Mexican Mestizo from the southern state of Morelos, comes to Mexico City to complain that their arable land has been enclosed, leaving them only in the barren hills. His expressed dissatisfaction with the response of the President Diaz puts him in danger, and when he rashly rescues a prisoner from the local militia he becomes an outlaw. Urged on by a strolling intellectual, Fernando, he supports the exiled Don Francisco Madero against Diaz, and becomes the leader of his forces in the South as Francisco ‘Pancho’ Villa is in the North. Diaz flees, and Madero takes his place; but he is a puppet president, in the hands of the leader of the army, Huerta, who has him assassinated when he tries to express solidarity for the men who fought for him. Zapata and Villa return to arms, and, successful in victory, seek to find a leader for the country. Unwillingly, Zapata takes the job, but, a while later, he responds to some petitioners from his own village with no more reassurance than had Diaz years before. Realizing that with power his idealism has gone, he returns with them to Morelos – specifically to investigate their complaints against his brother Eufemio. New leaders take his place, and, egged on by the always surviving Fernando, they decide that Zapata is a threat to their regime.

Synopsis:

There is a dead well-dressed man in a meadow clearing in the hills above a small Vermont town. Over the course of the day, several revelations come to light that question if Captain Wiles actually killed Harry. Sam, Mrs. Rogers, Captain Wiles and Miss Gravely’s individual and collective actions in the matter of Harry take into account friendship, self-preservation, the path of least resistance, love and a lot of realizations about what their past actions will mean. Their work may all be for naught if Deputy Sheriff Calvin Wiggs, the closest thing to law enforcement in their town, finds out about Harry.

By comparison, the American firefighters remain an impersonal mass, just mustaches behind doused visors until one of them spots the camera and smiles like Nanook. What planet is this?
