Alfred Vohrer & Samuel M. Sherman – Die blaue Hand AKA Creature With the Blue Hand (1967)

$

Die blaue Hand is a pretty wild movie on its own terms. It crams a lot of bizarre digressions into a mere 74 minutes, not counting some stuff reportedly inserted after the fact by an American distributor. You get a room full of hanging mannequins, a butler who reveals himself as the disgruntled ex-husband of the Emerson materfamilias, and a second inspection of the insane stripper, on top of everything I’ve already mentioned. If Kinski recedes during the story, Karl Lange emerges as an awesome looking villain in the Germanic Caligari tradition of evil asylum keepers, while Diana Koerner makes Myra an appealing heroine. Visually, even in something well short of restored form, Hand looks great in moody, Bava-influenced color, and the admitted datedness of the music is a point in the film’s favor as far as I’m concerned. However faithful he may or may not be to Edgar Wallace, Vohrer came up with a vivid modernized mix of the Mabusian crime tradition and the American “old dark house” style. A film like this was probably campy when it first appeared, but if you can tolerate its absurdities you’ll probably be as entertained by this brisk adventure as I was.

Ernst Lubitsch – Die Puppe AKA The Doll (1919)

Quote:
The Baron of Chanterelle (Max Kronert) demands that his nephew Lancelot (Hermann Thimig) get married to preserve the family line. A skittish and effeminate fellow, Lancelot does not wish to marry, so when his uncle presents him with 40 enthusiastic brides, he hides out with a group of monks. The gluttonous monks learn about Lancelot’s potential cash reward for his nuptials, so they cook up a plan: he can marry a doll…

Quote:
A sort of anti-“Pygmalion,” it’s the story of a puppetmaker who creates a life sized, wind-up replica of his daugther (the charming Ossi Oswalda, Lubitsch’s favorite comedienne during his German period) and is thrilled to find it working so wonderfully well — unaware that the puppet has been broken, and the daughter has taken its place. For the graciously cynical Lubitsch, art is not a life-giving miracle, but a convincing illusion.

Berlin Film Festival program notes:
The set is straight out of a winter wonderland, the comedy straight out of pantomime. The Doll conjures up the charm of childhood and amateurish helplessness using fake fairytale drapery and papier-mâché imagination. Lubitsch himself is seen building a doll’s house – only to have a real actor emerge from it. The scene isn’t a joke, rather a coup de theatre. The film is about boozing, gluttony, money, love and the fact that the most practical woman is a doll. This particular doll is neither soullessly evil or driven by fate, merely a little mischievous and ungainly. One mouse is all it takes to unmask her as a living, timorous girl. The main characters are a puppet-maker, his beautiful daughter, a doll who bears a striking resemblance to the daughter, an impudent apprentice who pesters both and breaks the doll while dancing with her, a mummy’s boy unfit for marriage and his rich uncle, who wants to buy his nephew’s bliss with a fat dowry. Whereupon the cissy – pursued by forty virgins – flees to a monastery, where bigoted monks out to fund their decadent life-styles with precisely this dowry suggest a fateful con-trick involving the doll. Lubitsch juggles with the ancient tools of the pantomime theatre: crude jokes, blunt sexual innuendo and surprise comedy. The result is a constant contrast between fairytale innocence and revealing comedy.

Noboru Tanaka – (Maruhi) jorô seme jigoku AKA The Hell-Fated Courtesan (1973)

The second of Nikkatsu’s trilogy of softcore melodramas looking at prostitution in various Japanese cities, this dark look at ritualistic temple sex in Edo from director Noboru Tanaka is quite a departure from the light, comic tone of Chusei Sone’s Maruhi: Joro Ichiba. Resembling nothing so much as an Asian version of all those Roman-set Italian sex films of the 1970s, the film deals with various members of Japanese royalty subjecting women to sadomasochistic sexual practices in the temple for supposedly religious reasons. Rie Nakagawa stars with Yuri Yamashina, Moeko Ezawa, and Hijiri Abe.

Luciano Emmer – Parigi è sempre Parigi AKA Paris is Always Paris (1951)

Parigi e Sempre Parigi (Paris is Always Paris) was the second feature-length effort from famed Italian documentary director Luciano Emmer. Whereas Emmer’s first feature, Domenica d’Agosto (Sunday in August) was a warm-hearted study of the Italian middle class, Parigi concentrates on a gentle cultural clash between a band of Italian sports fans and the citizenry of Paris. The hero, DeAngelis (Aldo Fabrizi), has heard so much about “naughty Paree” that he’s determined to experience that naughtiness first hand. This plot device, of course, obliges the director to introduce several delectable French mademoiselles in the proceedings. Ultimately, DeAngelis realizes that reports of French libertinism have been grossly exaggerated, but he has a high old time finding this out.— Allmovie.com

Denis Héroux – Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris [American Film Theatre] (1975)

Plot
The film opens in a puppet theater, where three audience members—a military officer, a taxi driver, and a woman on a shopping trip—discover they are being depicted as marionette caricatures against a backdrop of newsreel footage from the 1920s through the 1950s. They find themselves trapped backstage amidst bizarre circumstances … the puppet master is found dead above the stage, a gigantic plaster hand drops from the ceiling to the floor, and a deafening siren blares endlessly. The trio escapes from the theater to a beach, where the military officer locates the siren and kicks it, causing it to blow up.

The film then resumes the stage show’s plotless structure. In this version, different cinematic interpretations are used to illustrate the show’s score. A straightforward approach is for some songs: “Bachelor’s Dance” finds a bartender singing out loud of his potential mate while eyeing the female patrons of his establishment, while “Amsterdam” places a weary inebriate in a barroom corner while he watches the mix of sailors and sexual predators pass by his table. Other songs are interpreted in a surreal manner: with “Marieke,” images of a large red ball bouncing off a cliff are mixed with that of Elly Stone, dressed in a suit and tie, pursuing a little girl amidst the headstones of a cemetery.

Werner Nekes – Makimono (1974)

$

Quote:
“The title refers to Japanese landscape painting on rolls. Furthermore it indicates the film’s theme, the balance of colors (blurred tones of blue, green and grey) and the type of montage that gives priority to continuity of development rather than to disruption and contrast. This continuity is achieved by dissolvings and double exposures and by extremely long pans. The rhythm accelerates: a meditation on landscape, which unfolds before the eye or is visually paced out, gives way to fluidity and pure motion, to a feeling of dizziness, the result of two contrasting camera movements. The world resembles a reflection in the water; then, however, rapid montage creates a calligraphy consisting of the quick and sharp black strokes of a Hartung painting, until one finally arrives at the glittering simplicity of an early movie where each frame still retains the weight of its individual tracks, of earth and of the world. Anthony Moore’s Soundtrack strikingly agrees with the images presented and by means of three consecutive modulations bestows unto them the structure of a concerto.”

Jean-Luc Godard – Charlotte et son Jules AKA Charlotte and Her Boyfriend (1960)

“Charlotte et son Jules was made the year before Breathless and in many ways prefigures the arrival of that major film. Shot entirely in or from a single hotel room, it centres on Jules, played by Jean-Paul Belmondo who delivers a rapid-fire tirade about his girlfriend and their relationship when she turns up back in the apartment. The poverty of the production is indicated by the fact that the voice of the Belmondo character is that of Godard himself. But its machine gun dialogue and restless jump-cutting camera is almost an advance preview of the long sort of love scene between Michel and Patricia in Patricia’s tiny apartment in Breathless.”

Susumu Hani – Kanojo to kare AKA She and He (1963)

Quote:
One of Hani’s recurring themes was the status of women in modern society. His first attempt at the subject was this Antonioniesque melodrama set in a sterile high rise complex. A woman resident becomes discontent with the empty life she and her husband are leading. They encounter a street beggar who lives in poverty with his dog and a blind orphan. The woman becomes fascinated by the beggar’s world and pursues a friendship which leads to terrible discord and a tragedy.

“A minutely observed, intimate and unsentimental drama of social consciousness that uncovers the spiritual wasteland of suburbia, and explores the barriers erected by differences of class, money and, above all, aspiration.” —Holt’s Foreign Film Guide.

Quote:
“A Japanese novelist once wrote that we should be very thankful that our eyes are not in our hands, because if they were we would always have to see our own faces. I think this is fascinating concept. Sometimes we can achieve this in the cinema. Of course when you are acting, your ‘eye’ should see your face, but when you view rushes, your eyes are constantly in your hands. I find it extremely interesting to observe the relationship between cinema and the perception of one’s own image.”
