Depiction of a small Turkish town, as seen from the perspective of an 11 year old girl and her 7 year – old brother. The four part film unfolds along with the seasons. “Kasaba” is an extremely personal film, like stylized poetry, beautifully shot with amateur actors. Shot in Black and White, was made on a low budget, not just due to a lack of money, but also because Ceylan wanted to work with a small crew to create an intimate mood. The actors in the film are mainly relatives and friends of the director, the script is based on an autobiographical story by his sister and was shot in a village in Anatolia where he spent his childhood.

A son retour, la princesse découvre la mort de son amant et plonge dans un sommeil profond.« Le film a été tourné à Tahiti (notamment dans la vallée d’Orofero) et sur l’atoll de Tetiaroa, se souvient Angelo Oliver, chef opérateur du film. Nous tournions principalement le week-end, afin que tous soient disponibles. C’était l’un de mes premiers films en tant que chef opérateur. J’avais été assistant sur de nombreux films de Jean l’Hote au sein de l’unité cinéma de l’OTAC. Nous tournions avec l’Eclair 16 de Dominique. C’était vraiment une belle aventure, nous n’avions pas beaucoup de moyens mais nous avions la foi en ce que nous faisions. La première du film a eu lieu dans le grand théâtre, ensuite je crois que le film a été projeté dans les îles. »

Sprawling epic which follows the Prescotts, an emigrant family through four generations, from the Erie Canal in the 1830’s to their settled home in the West a half a century later. By this time Lilith is the elderly lady of the family, having survived long enough to see the dream of settlement realized, but not, mercifully, the aerial shots of the Los Angeles freeway traffic with which the film ends.

Twins of Evil unabashedly exploits the twins’ assets to pump up the film’s sex appeal; it also seems to cater to viewers with a vampire fetish. Still, neither is necessarily a bad thing in a vampire film; Twins of Evil does create an effectively sensuous mood while also managing to sustain a fair amount of tension throughout the picture. Although Universal Pictures, the U.S. distributor, extracted nearly all of the flesh and bloodletting from its release, the original British cut retains everything and is the usual copy found on video. Like its predecessors, the script for Twins of Evil is loosely based on LeFanu’s classic vampire story Carmilla.”

Minorities are made scapegoats of every calamity as nations subdivide into religious and ethnic zones, each seemingly eager to annihilate the other or extinguish itself on the altar of martyrdom. FATHER, SON AND HOLY WAR explores in two parts the possibility that the psychology of violence against “the other” may lie in male insecurity, itself an inevitable product of the very construction of “manhood.”

Part 1: TRIAL BY FIRE a reference to the ordeal that the Hindu god-king Rama tested his wife’s fidelity with, looks at the communal fires that have consumed India in recent years. “Sati,” a rite by which Roop Kanwar was thrown on her husband’s funeral pyre; the upper castes’ “purifying” fire rituals and the communal fires that ravaged Bombay after the demolition of a mosque in Ayodhya, are set against a small group of fire fighters: a Rajasthani woman who, against the odds, condemns Sati; a Muslim woman who battles gender discriminatory laws; and a band of Hindus and Muslims who march for communal harmony in the riot-torn streets of Bombay.

Part 2: HERO PHARMACY examines “manhood” in the context of religious strife. The Hindu majority has been raised on stories of marauding Muslim invaders who raped their women, destroyed their temples, and forced religious conversions. Today, some Hindus demand revenge for crimes committed centuries ago. They reject non-violence as impotence and set out to be “real men.” Meanwhile the Muslim minority – despite fears of genocide, will not take things lying down. They too are driven by the imperative to be “real men.” The result is carnage. Is violence inherent in the human condition? The film invokes pre-patriarchy, not to determine the past, but to imagine the future.
