It’s 1928 in oil rich southeast Kansas. High school seniors Bud Stamper and Deanie Loomis are in love with each other. Bud, the popular football captain, and Deanie, the sensitive soul, are “good” kids who have only gone as far as kissing. Unspoken to each other, they expect to get married to each other one day. But both face pressures within the relationship, Bud who has the urges to go farther despite knowing in his heart that if they do that Deanie will end up with a reputation like his own sister, Ginny Stamper, known as the loose, immoral party girl, and Deanie who will do anything to hold onto Bud regardless of the consequences. They also face pressures from their parents who have their own expectation for their offspring. Bud’s overbearing father, Ace Stamper, the local oil baron, does not believe Bud can do wrong and expects him to go to Yale after graduation, which does not fit within Bud’s own expectations for himself. And the money and image conscious Mrs. Loomis just wants Deanie to get married as soon as possible to Bud so that Deanie will have a prosperous life in a rich family. When Bud makes a unilateral decision under these pressures, it leads to a path which affects both his and Deanie’s future.

Jack Lee – A Circle of Deception (1960)

$

I looked out for this movie way back then because it starred Bradford Dillman who had made such a big impression as the charismatically cheerful but murderous Artie Strauss in “Compulsion”.”Circle of Deception” proved something of a letdown because Dillman, as a man taken to drink through self-hatred was hardly sympathetic and his costar, the ex-model Suzy Parker was no less unemotive than she had been before. As it happened I think this was Dillmans last gasp at starring roles, but he became an extremely busy TV and film supporting player for many years thereafter. The film itself predated the downbeat spy genre in which our spymasters were portrayed for once as being as devious and viscious as their spymasters, but it was barely noticed, and it was later that “the Ipcress File” got the genre going. What “Circle of Deception” did have going for it for me was the shock revelation that, well, Dillman had been disgracefully set up. I remember it for that,if nothing else.

Quote:
Awe-inspiring, brutal and stunning, Wake in Fright is the story of John Grant, a bonded teacher who arrives in the rough outback mining town of Bundanyabba, planning to stay overnight before catching the plane to Sydney. But, as his one night stretches to five, he plunges headlong toward his own destruction. When the alcohol-induced mist lifts, the educated John Grant is no more. Instead there is a self-loathing man in a desolate wasteland, dirty, red-eyed, sitting against a tree and looking at a rifle with one bullet left… Believed lost for many years, Wake in Fright has been painstakingly restored by Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive and AtLab Deluxe, and is presented in its original uncompromising form.

The race goes over 24 hours on 14.5 kilometers of cordoned country road. Every few hours the two drivers per car alternate – but it’s still a challenge for concentration and material. In the focus is the duel between the German Stahler in Ferrari 512LM and the American Delaney in Gulf Team Porsche 917. Delaney is under extraordinary pressure, because the year before he caused a severe accident, in which his friend Lisa’s husband was killed.

The last film in Youssef Chahine’s autobiographical Alexandria Trilogy stars Chahine himself as his cinematic alter ego, Yehia Mourad, completing his merging of fiction with real life and drama with psychodrama. Opening with Chahine’s triumph at the Berlin Film Festival, where he took home the Silver Bear for Alexandria…Why? (the first film in the trilogy–this is layered stuff), the film explores Yehia’s obsession with his young star, Amir (Amr Abdel-Guelil), while participating in the general strike of 1987. As Yehia fantasizes about the films they would make together (one of them looks like a loony take on Jesus Christ Superstar), he elevates Amir from a kind of adopted son to cinematic messiah. But while caught up in the strike, Yehia becomes enchanted by a former actress, Nadia (Yousra), turned dedicated revolutionary, and he decides to cast her in his next feature.

Stavros Tornes – Coatti (1977)

Synopsis:
Stavros and Charlotte – i.e. the director and his partner in life and art, Charlotte van Gelder – are wandering the streets of a burdensome reality like immigrants, tracing the world around them through friendships, journeys and political quests. Made with minimal means with a few rolls of black and white film they managed to scrape together, this is a thoroughly unconventional film that defies traditional narrative structures, spectacularly revealing the director’s true vision: a primordial cinema full of imagery that comes out of nowhere and communicates freely, like a small wonder. A large slice of the international film critic community – including Frenchman Louis Skorecki who described the film as a comet – will adore “Coatti” and continue to support Tornes’ lonely path until the end.

Quote:
La Raulito is marginalized and feels that all of her actions are called into question but cannot understand why. Is it possible that she represents something that everyone fears? (“There are tomboys… but what was that that just passed by”, people say). In any case it is curious that the places where la Raulito encounters a single friend (María Vaner) should be a cabaret [rather than ???] in jail or in her home which is dominated by an abusive husband? What the film stresses again and again is that there is no place for la Raulito in a society that imposes strict [gender] roles. Toward this end, Murúa constantly undermines any definite characterization of the sexual identity of his protagonist… a decision that respects her transgressive, defiant condition

Argentinean filmmaker Edgardo Cozarinsky’s 2005 feature Night Watch (or Ronda Nocturna) is a searing, scorching character study of Victor (Gonzalo Heredia), a young hustler dealing and pimping on the streets of Buenos Aires, with a calm demeanor that masks a nasty, virulent temper. When a series of external threats — including an attempted homicide and a broken affair — rob Victor of his bearings, he must suddenly reassess his values and priorities by taking a long, difficult journey into the dark night of his own soul. Night Watch co-stars Rafael Ferro and Moro Anghileri. Cozarinsky wrote the original script.

Henry King – A Yank in the R.A.F. (1941)

$

Tyrone Power pursues Betty Grable and becomes A YANK IN THE R.A.F., in this romantic drama set in the early days of WWII. For smooth-talking daredevil pilot Tim Baker (Power), flying is a game and the war is simply an opportunity to make some quick money. When a high-paying job ferrying bombers across the Atlantic lands him in London, he runs into Carol (Grable), an old flame, and joins the R.A.F. just to be near her. But problems arise when Carol is pursued by another pilot (John Sutton), who treats her better and happens to be Baker’s superior officer! When both men start flying bombing missions over Europe, Carol finds that choosing between them is suprisingly hard, and Baker learns that not everyone takes life as lightly as he does.

Tyrone Power is the quintessential American abroad, a brash, smart-talking flyboy with a roving eye and a mercenary heart–in other words, a part made for him. “I know, I’m a worm,” he smiles as he plants a kiss on Betty Grable, the American showgirl who can’t seem to stay mad at the charming cad who enlists in the RAF just to impress her. The marvelous special-effects model work delivers two excellent airborne sequences (a harrowing bombing run over Germany and a swarming dogfight over the evacuation of Dunkirk), but as military melodrama it’s ultimately pure Hollywood fluff and only halfhearted propaganda. A Yank in the RAF is less about the war in Europe than about Power’s rakish grin and future GI pin-up Grable’s oft-displayed legs, and they display their charms for all they’re worth. –Sean Axmaker

Synopsis:
Once upon a time there was a man. He lived with his mother, and worked as the caretaker of a large country house in Chile. One day the man found a bone in the garden. The bone had holes in it – it was a flute. The man took the flute and began to play it. The music turned into a song, and the voice singing the song begged the man to look for the other bones of a body scattered here and there. So the man and his mother set off following every path – that of God and those of the devil -, looking for the bones so that they could put the skeleton of the Christian man back together again and give him a Christian burial. And they saw what they saw, and lived what they lived. Many a story. And although they never told their tale to anyone, others told it for them.

Synopsis:
A puppy was born in Akita Prefecture and sent as a gift to Professor Ueno of Tokyo University. Although professor’s wife does not want keep the dog. Professor Ueno loves the puppy so much and names it Hachi. Professor goes to work by railways everyday. Hachi walks to Shibuya Station with Professor each morning and greets him in the evening, no matter what the weather is. One day, Professor Ueno has a stroke and passed away. His family sold the house and moved to another city, but Hachi keeps visiting the house and waiting at the Shibuya station, believing his master.

ABOUT HACHIKO (taken from en.wikipedia.org)
Hachiko (Born November 10, 1923, died March 8, 1935), sometimes known in Japanese as ?? ??? (chuken hachiko, lit. ‘faithful dog Hachiko’), was an Akita dog born in November 1923 in the city of Odate, Akita Prefecture remembered for his remarkable and touching loyalty to his master.

Life
In 1924, Hachiko was brought to Tokyo by his owner, Hidesamuro Ueno (?????), a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo. During his owner’s life, Hachiko saw him off from the front door and greeted him at the end of the day at the nearby Shibuya Station. Even after Ueno’s death in May 1925, Hachiko returned every day to the station to wait for him, and did so for the next 11 years. Hachiko’s devotion to his lost master moved those around him, who nicknamed him “faithful dog”.

Publication
That same year, another of Ueno’s former students (who had become something of an expert on Akitas) saw the dog at the station and followed him to the Kobayashi home where he learned the history of Hachiko’s life. Shortly after this meeting, the former student published a documented census of Akitas in Japan. His research found only 30 purebred Akitas remaining, including Hachiko from Shibuya Station. Ueno’s former student returned frequently to visit the dog and over the years published several articles about Hachiko’s remarkable loyalty. In 1932 one of these articles, published in Tokyo’s largest newspaper, threw the dog into the national spotlight. Hachiko became a sensation throughout the land. His faithfulness to his master’s memory impressed the people of Japan as a spirit of family loyalty all should strive to achieve. Teachers and parents used Hachiko’s vigil as an example for children to follow. A well-known Japanese artist rendered a sculpture of the dog, and throughout the country a new awareness of the Akita breed grew.

Death
Hachiko died on March 8, 1935, of filariasis. His stuffed and mounted remains are kept at the National Science Museum in Ueno, Tokyo.
