Masao Adachi & Kôji Wakamatsu – Sekigun-P.F.L.P: Sekai sensô sengen AKA Red Army/PFLP: Declaration of World War (1971)

Quote:
It was a milestone of film as activism, cinema as movement in Japan’s context. Adachi and Wakamatsu went to Beirut on the way back from the Cannes Film Festival. There, in collaboration with the Red Army members and PFLP, they produced this newsreel film depicting the everyday activities of Arab guerrillas as a cinematic narrative on the world revolution. Being a fusion of intense agitation and the ‘landscape theory’ approach inherited from “Aka. Serial Killer,” the film was conceived as a new form of news report, and was discussed in synchronicity with J-L Godard’s Dziga Vertov Group and the revolutionary films of Latin America, transcending geographical distances. In order to negate the conventional idea of a film screening, the Red Bus Film Screening Troop was organized and the film screening was acted out nation-wide. The English and French subtitled versions were produced and the film has been screened internationally, including in Palestine. The film is important in the sense that it was an embodiment of the collaboration between Japanese filmmakers and Palestinians in that era, and also as a historical document of Palestine, where constant bombings made it hardly possible for Palestinians to possess their own images.

Jan Troell – Ingenjör Andrées luftfärd AKA The Flight of the Eagle (1982)

The Swedish 19th century engineer S. A. Andrée sets out to become the first man on the north pole. His idea is to launch a polar expedition using a hydrogen balloon, together with two friends. The balloon, “The Eagle”, takes off from Svalbard in 1897, but the three men are not heard of again.

Quote:
Seen in America as “The Flight of the Eagle,” this is one of the two most extraordinary movies of Man’s relationship to “space (area).” Where “Das Boot” best captured a world of confined spaces, this movie dramatically arrests the viewer in an terrifying environment of “too much space.” Beginning as a beautiful period-piece, this story follows our three adventurers as they pitch and win the argument, to be the first humans to reach the North Pole. As an accomplished balloonist, Max Von Sydow as the real life Swedish Engineer, S. A. Andrée, meets and collects two hardy companions and embarks the `great adventure’ via what else ? …a balloon! The film brilliantly captures the three travelers’ descent from excitement into stark realization that `blueprints’ do not always describe reality. The remainder of the film which runs about 3 hours, is an incredible story of how intellect, will always be limited against the harsh reality of God. Tremendous performances by Von Sydow and company, and significantly inter-cut with actual photos from the expedition, this movie won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. One of the most psychologically-terrifying, emotional films (and a true story), this is a must see for fans of great film-making.

Quote:
The underlying vision of the production has the audacity we expect from Von Trier, a daring and inventive filmmaker. He sets his story in a Rocky Mountains town during the Great Depression, but doesn’t provide a real town (or a real mountain). The first shot looks straight down on the floor of a large sound stage, where the houses of the residents are marked out with chalk outlines, and there are only a few props — some doors, desks, chairs, beds. We will never leave this set, and never see beyond it; on all sides in the background there is only
blankness.

Augusto Tretti – Il Potere (1971)

Review by Ennio Flaiano (L’Espresso, November 14th 1971)
In the scaffolds of Italian cinematography, there’s Augusto Tretti, with his two films, «La legge della tromba» and «Il potere» (two films in two years, the first one barely seen by anyone other than close friends), very hard to place in the landscape. Should be left alone. It will either be an isolated phenomenon, or worse, one that needs to be isolated. He will perhaps, in this country of people who find their ways, copycats, but surely bad ones or just clever ones. Tretti has a gift, his simplicity, which cannot be copied, it implies the superb innocence of the hermit. It’s a simplicity that brings the photographic image to the likes of Nadar, of Daguerre, and also to neo-realism […].

Actors:
-Paola Tosi (Stone Age woman, Indian, visitor in the factory/farm)

Dan Deacon & Jimmy Joe Roche – Ultimate Reality [+Extras] (2007)

Quote:
Ultimate Reality is a collaborative performance by Baltimore’s Dan Deacon and Jimmy Joe Roche. It combines an intense musical composition for electronics and drums with a psychedelic montage of Arnold Schwarzenegger films that is projected at a monumental scale. The live energy of the performance has allowed the piece to freely move between art and music venues and grant it a wide audience of appreciation.

The forty minute music composition, written by Dan Deacon, blasts from three sets of loudspeakers during performance. Driving and cinematic, the electronic piece is accompanied by two live drummers who pound a marching rhythm.

The footage was appropriated by Jimmy from Schwarzenegger classics such as Terminator 2 and Total Recall to accompany the composition for Ultimate Reality. Jimmy has transformed the violent struggles of these films into a mesmerizing sequence of fantastic images where popular science fiction icons seep in and out of mirrored layers of kaleidoscopic color.

Peter Davis – The Selling of the Pentagon (1971)

$

The Selling of the Pentagon, was an important documentary aired in primetime on CBS on 23 February 1971. The aim of this film, produced by Peter Davis, was to examine the increasing utilization and cost to the taxpayers of public relations activities by the military-industrial complex in order to shape public opinion in favor of the military…..

While the controversial nature of the subject-matter was clearly understood by the producers, and a strong reaction was anticipated, the virulence and the direction of this reaction could not have been foreseen. In the end, the furor surrounding The Selling of the Pentagon would serve as a significant benchmark in evaluating the First Amendment Rights of the broadcast media….

The Selling of the Pentagon was a milestone in the development of the television documentary, not so much for what it contained, but because it represented a clear statement that the networks could not be made to bend to government control in the technological era.

Anthony Page – Middlemarch [+Extra] (1994)

about this production

This classic BBC TV production, is a dramatisation of George Eliot’s novel: set at the cusp of the Industrial Revolution, the story chronicles the life, loves, foibles, and politics of the fictional English town of Middlemarch. The plot centres on the socially-conscious, but naive, Dorothea Brooke (Juliet Aubrey), whose disastrous match to the pedantic Reverend Edward Casaubon (Patrick Malahide) sets in motion a chain of events that will change the face of Middlemarch forever. The efforts of the dashing young physician Tertius Lydgate (Douglas Hodge) to modernise the medical practices at the new hospital causes quite a stir, both in the political power structure, headed by the evil Mr. Nicholas Bulstrode (Peter Jeffrey), and the heart of sweet Rosamund Vincy (Trevyn McDowell), the town beauty. Smaller plots interweave the action and lead to reconciliation, resignation, remuneration, and resolution.

Robert Reinert – Opium (1919)

Quote:
English doctor Professor Gesellius is in China researching the effects of opium. He frees a young woman named Sin from a den of inequity run by Nung Chiang. When he sails for home with the girl, Chiang swears vengeance. In England, it emerges that Sin is the illegitimate daughter of one of Gesellius’ colleagues, whose son is having an affair with the doctor’s wife. The son is poisoned and Gesellius becomes a murder suspect. He flees to India with Sin, pursued by the vengeful Nung Chiang … Made during a censorship-free period, Opium combined the thrill of the exotic with the titillation of the erotic; scenes of opium intoxication resemble the satyr play of Max Reinhardt’s Die Insel der Seligen (Isle of Bliss, 1913). But “under the surface, Opium captures the experience and shock of World War I. […] Reinert and his cameraman Helmar Lerski developed a brilliant, hallucinatory cinematic language”. (Tobias Nagl) – This colour reconstruction was based on nitrate source elements from the film museums in Munich and Düsseldorf, and the Austrian Film Archive. At a length equivalent to 2,150 metres of celluloid, this is closer to the original release than any version known to have survived.

Kajirô Yamamoto & Akira Kurosawa – Uma aka Horse (1941)

The story of the film is simple: A young girl in the countryside raises a young horse and develops a deep relationship to the animal. But the war is becoming part of life, so in the end she has to sacrifice her horse and sell it to the military.

The idea of propaganda film has been discussed by various scholars. Donald Keene mentioned that it only takes the ending of a film like uma to turn an overall innocent story into propaganda. The film was in 1941 officially supported and praised by the Japanese government. An official government statement commented: “Feel Gratitude in your hear and lend yourself to support the war effort” and Army Minister Tojo Hideki commented: “Only by means of the heartfelt affection of the breeders can fine horses – a mobile weapon that will become increasingly necessary in the future – be raised.”

A film about a teenager fond of horses, that turns into a propaganda film – so why should you be interested? Uma directed by Kajiro Yamamoto is often regarded as being the first film with a major involvement of Akira Kurosawa – who apart from his job as assistant director was said to have a love affair with the film’s teen aged star Takamine Hideko. Takamine herself was already one of the greatest stars of Japanese cinema, affectionately referred to as “Deko-chan” by her fans. After the war she would appear in many famous movies, most prominently in the works of Kinoshita and Naruse.

Peter Watkins – The War Game (1966)

Quote:

Peter Watkins’ The War Game, which was filmed in handheld documentary fashion, speculates on the aftereffects of a nuclear war. Some of the images are almost impossible to look at; they truly illustrate the theory that, in the wake of such a holocaust, the living will envy the dead. The most heart-wrenching scene is the simplest. Asked what he wants to be when he grows up, a sullen young boy, physically unhurt but with obviously deep emotional scars, mutters “I don’t want to be nothin’.” Filmed for BBC television, The War Game was rejected by that august concern as being too graphic. The 47-minute film was released to theatres, making it eligible for the Best Documentary Academy Award, which it won in 1966

Werner Herzog – Mein liebster Feind – Klaus Kinski AKA My Best Fiend (1999)

Quote:
The love-hate relationship between Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski is utterly puzzling to outsiders. The film is about the deep trust between an actor and a director and their independently and simultaneously hatched plans to murder one another.

Quote:
In the 1950s, an adolescent Werner Herzog was transfixed by a film performance of the young Klaus Kinski. Years later, they would share an apartment where, in an unabated, forty-eight-hour fit of rage, Kinski completely destroyed the bathroom. From this chaos, a violent, love-hate, profoundly creative partnership was born. In 1972, Herzog cast Kinski in Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972). Four more films would follow. In this personal documentary, Herzog traces the often violent ups and downs of their relationship, revisiting the various locations of their films and talking to the people they worked with.

IMDB comments say:
This is one of the best Mexican short movies ever. You could probably imagine the Mexican idiosyncrasy, read some history books, but you will find a big difference and experience the feeling of the post-revolutionary age of Mexico with this film.

Labor unions, the invasion of large scale and global foreign companies, the mother’s love, the Mexican habits descriptions are part of this master piece.

Adding the emotion of Jaime Sabine’s narration voice in all the allegoric signs and metaphors.

The problem is that is almost impossible to get a copy or to find it in Mexico, probably in Europe (I’ve heard it was restricted by the Mexican government in that period).
