29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

As the year 1955 is moving towards autumn, Turkey’s increasingly tense political atmosphere starts to cast its dark shadow on the glittering beauty of Beyoglu. Behcet is the only son of a father in whom the government and the bureaucracy take a close interest due to his strong influence in Antakya. While working as a research assistant at the Faculty of Law in Istanbul, Behcet is falling under the sway of extreme nationalism as a result of his upbringing and the influential role model of his father. The only thing that causes Behcet to stumble on this road is the woman he secretly observes through the window of the apartment opposite his own. This woman, who is aware that she is being observed by Behcet, is Elena. She is one of those peerless beauties making up the cosmopolitan kaleidoscope of Beyoglu. A prostitute with a childlike spirit, she is sold off to high-level bureaucrats by her grandmother, who herself is a former prostitute.Nevertheless, an enigmatic interdependence exists between grandmother and granddaughter, which extends beyond the solidarity of being non-muslim in a muslim society. The paths of Behcet and Elena cross in the fog of the tense political atmosphere of the “6-7 September Incidents” as it begins to descend slowly upon Beyoglu. In the midst of a “Deep State” operation, singling out non-muslims as the enemy, the uncontainable love between Elena and Behcet is struggling to defend itself… The two young people are on the same side in the country of love, but on different sides in the country they live in. As Behcet walks the political line drawn by the pen of a militant columnist in colours that get darker by the day, every step he takes towards the morning of the 6th of September takes him farther away from his love, Elena, an enemy national. Elena, on the other hand, while trying with her love for Behcet to break through the walls of a dead-end destiny drawn up for her by her grandmother, finds herself in yet another cul-de-sac: the walls of a militant policy that has taken her lover hostage…

The study of French cinema has expanded dramatically in recent years, as it is increasingly taught alongside literature in modern language departments. Many entrants to courses have no previous experience of film study. This book, written by two leading scholars of French film, offers students an introduction to the history and theory of French cinema, while giving them an understanding of the concepts and techniques involved in the study of film. It also contains a model essay, sample film analyses, and an appendix of statistics, filmography, bibliography and glossary, making this book an indispensable and comprehensive resource.

Phil Powrie is Professor of French Cultural Studies and Director of the Centre for Research into Film and Media at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Keith Reader is Professor of Modern French Studies at the University of Glasgow.

From IMDB:
Coskun (Oguz Tunc;), who grew up in an orphanage, has been in love with the very famous film star Derya Altinay (Turkan Soray) all of his life. His only purpose in life is to meet her one day and write a film script for her. He is so much in love with her that he believes that he lives with the two film characters which she performed in her old movies. However these two old characters do not want him to write an original script for Derya Altinay as they will be forgotten when a new character is created. So, they start an emotional war to prevent him from writing his script. Written by Zeki Giritli

James Clayden – Hamlet X (2004)

29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

James Clayden, described by Adrian Martin at this year’s Rotterdam Film Festival as ‘one of Australia’s best kept artistic secrets’, returns to MIFF following the screening of his highly acclaimed Ghost Paintings series in 2003. His latest audiovisual collage is a meditation in image and sound on Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Employing a symphonic structure, this latest UFO (Unidentified Filmed Object) from Clayden is a haunting and atmospheric work.

Unconcerned with narrative constraints, the ‘plot’ of Hamlet X is both brief and almost incidental to Clayden’s motives: a man (Tom Wright) is released from prison and moves into a deserted city building with a woman friend (Helen Hopkins), where he reluctantly becomes involved with a production of Hamlet. Haunted by the uncertainty of his past, together with his guilt for exisiting, he becomes more and more like Shakespeare’s infamous Dane.

‘australian James Clayden belongs to a race of artists that in the absence of a better term, we could call (total) filmmaker, playwright, plastic artist and video artist, his works in audio visual medium seem to defy all definitions, as shown by his Ghost Paintings.’ -Buenos Aires Film Festival

nvasion is the legend of a city, real or imagined, under attack by powerful enemies and defended by a handful of men who may not be heroes. They will carry on their struggle to the finish, unaware that the battle is endless.

“Two analogous experiences, distant from each other, now live in my memory. The oldest has been with me since 1923: I’m referring to that afternoon when I held in my hands the first copy of my first book. The other, the recent one, is the emotion I felt when I saw Invasion on the screen. A printed book is not so different from a manuscript; a film is a visible projection, detailed, heard, enriched, and magical os something dreamed, barely descried. As I am one of the authors, I cannot allow myself to priase it. I would like to leave in writing, however, that Invasion es loke no other film, and it might well be the first of a new fantastic genre” –Jorge Luis Borges, Buenos Aires, April 1969

Plot summary:
Introvert Joosep is the butt of crude jokes from his classmates who are irritated by his taciturn nature. The only support he has comes from Kaspar, whom he sits next to in class.

Quote:
This isn’t a sociological probe into the theme of adolescent bullying which might turn violently against the perpetrators, but more a universal reflection on the darker sides of the human soul, often hidden beneath an attractive exterior, ready to provoke an unexpected reaction under excess pressure. The acting performances of the leads, in particular, give the story – a linear progression where silly pranks develop into a tragic outcome – a highly credible dimension.

Barbara Hammer – Maya Deren’s Sink (2011)

29f7c043f76a2bde437fd0d52a185152

This evocative tribute to the mother of American avantgarde film calls forth the spirit of one who was larger than life as recounted by those who knew her. Friends and contemporaries float through her homes, recalling in tiny bits and pieces words of Deren’s architectural and personal interior space. Clips from her films are projected back into the spaces where they were originally filmed. Fluid light projections of intimate space provide an elusive agency for a filmmaker most of us will never know.”
BERLINALE

“Maya Deren’s Sink explores Deren’s concepts of space, time and form through visits and projections filmed in her LA and NY homes. Light projections in Deren’s intimate space evoke a former time and space providing entree into the homes of an influential filmmaker we will never know. The film reclaims the spaces that inspired her work in order to share it with audiences. Time and space are collapsed as film locations of the 40’s are re-imagined in the present.

Performances by an actor based on Deren’s film and writing as well as overlooked biographical insights reveal a creative personality untouched by convention. Voices from the past speaking from doorways, windows and picture frames include the current L.A. and N.Y.C. home owners, Teiji Ito’s second wife, Judith Malvina, Carolee Schneemann, Ross Lipmann and others. Through collapsing time and extending space, a unique architectural portrait of the artist is created.

The experimental soundtrack is compiled and augmented by the music of Teiji Ito (Maya’s third husband) and Tavia Ito, Teiji’s daughter.”

This compelling film represents a rare record of an original genius. In Jung on Film, the pioneering psychologist tells us about his collaboration with Sigmund Freud, about the insights he gained from listening to his patients’ dreams, and about the fascinating turns his own life has taken. Dr. Richard I. Evans, a Presidential Medal of Freedom nominee, interviews Jung, giving us a unique understanding of Jung’s many complex theories, while depicting Jung as a sensitive and highly personable human being.

Quote:
On August 9, 1945, the Americans dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki. This film, based on a story by Mitsuharu Inoue, describes the daily life of people in Nagasaki the day before that fateful event. It presents the human drama of people’s lives, and their feelings of joy and sadness. These include a newlywed couple, an expectant mother, an American prisoner of war, and star-struck lovers who must say farewell because the boy is called to serve in the army. Each of these people, like others in the city, hoped to live with their dreams for ‘tomorrow’. However, tomorrow never comes for them, as their lives are brought to an abrupt and unexpected end. But in this case, knowing how the story ends doesn’t detract from the experience at all; rather, it heightens the emotional impact, which is further enhanced by the poignant musical score from Teizo Matsumura. ‘Ashita’ is the first film in Kazuo Kuroki’s ‘War Requiem Trilogy,’ which also includes ‘Utsukushii Natsu Kirishima’ (2002) and ‘Chichi to Kuraseba’ (2004).

When Alejandro “Mono” dies, his brother and two closest friends, a tight-knit group since childhood, are left to figure out how to take care of his young daughter, Guadalupe. They want to give her all the love they felt for Mono and secure her future, but there isn’t a single peso left in the bank. Mono invested all of his money in a promising soccer player whose promise hasn’t panned out, and the three hundred thousand dollars Mono spent on his transfer is soon to be lost for good. How do you sell a forward who can’t score a goal? How do you maintain relationships when repeated failures create fissures in lifelong loyalties? Fernando, Mauricio, and “Ruso” pool the few resources in their arsenal to come up with strategies in their desperate attempt to recoup Mono’s investment for Guadalupe. Papers in the Wind is a tribute to friendship and proof that love and humor can triumph over sadness.

Most likely my favourite film of all time; the greatest sensory experience I had watching a film. Makino Takashi is probably the most formally interesting filmmaker working today and this is a great intro to his work. Watching his films are looking at the universe from outer space, falling into decay, destruction and beauty – and interesting sound collaborations.

Powerful and poetic, Nostalgia for the Countryside explores the tensions and traumas of everyday life in a rural Vietnamese village. The arrival from abroad of Quyen, who fled the village as a small girl, coincides with the sexual awakening of 17-year-old Nham, through whose eyes the story unfolds. While picturesque on the surface, the countryside that Quyen dreamed about turns out to be a landscape of poverty, passion and tragedy – though not without pockets of warmth and humor.

On the fringes of Dublin two children, Kylie and Dylan, live in a suburban housing estate devoid of life, colour and the prospect of escape. Kylie lives with five other siblings and her overworked mother. Next door, Dylan lives in the shadow of an alcoholic father and the memory of an elder brother who ran away from home two years earlier.

After a violent altercation with his father, Dylan runs away from home and Kylie decides to go with him. Together they make their way to the magical night time lights of inner city Dublin, to search for Dylan’s brother, and in the hope of starting a new life.

Lance Daly’s vision of Dublin, as seen through the innocent eyes of our protagonists, is a kaleidoscope of magic, wonder and mystery. But as the night wears on, and Dublin takes on a darker character, the two children have to rely on the kindness of strangers, the advice of Bob Dylan and their trust in each other to survive the night.

It originally was theme for “Complete Chaos” visualized bydouble exposure method, however it appeared entire opposite phenomenon as “Birth of Cosmos”, and that is unparalleled miraculous story behind the film.

This film visually demonstrates the fact that human has ability to change Chaos to Cosmos.

Quote:
“In Search of the Not-Yet-Seen Ideal Film?”

What shall I call the films that I produced? I have avoided calling them “experimental films.” That is because the existing films that are called “experimental films” neither influenced me nor did I consider myself being active in the context.

Especially in Japan, I perceived “experimental films” as belonging to a stereotyped genre of films with a closed and established culture. I felt that my “ideal film” did not exist there.

What is an ideal film? I saw my first hallucination in the form of an image at the age of five, when I was in a serious traffic accident that made me wander between life and death. It was a dream of a flight through an eternal night of endless darkness, in a place filled with lights more brilliant than any image I had ever seen. When I vaguely saw a green horizon, which seemed like the final destination of the flight, I realized that I was going to die.

Just when I tried to break out of the unconscious state, as if trying to break loose from an extremely strong sleep paralysis, I opened my eyes. I was on an operating table. What I thought was the sun turned out to be the light above the operating table. The green horizon that I was seeing was my electrocardiogram. That was when my dream and reality joined together in their entirety. Although unconsciously, I had an experience in which what was happening to my body in reality had entered my dream and affected me.

Ever since I can remember, I was a boy indulged in movies. However, no movie affected me so strongly like the images I saw in my dream. There was no creative movie that could directly affect my dream or imagination through the experience of simply seeing it.

Since the time I wrote a paper entitled “The Infinitely Expanding Sensory World and Film” around when I was 17 years old, I have been pursuing my “ideal film.” I continue to dream about an unshaped, organic lump-like film that links with the consciousness and mental state of the viewers as well as each individual’s memories and never ceases to change.

Now, I may well be able to call these five films that I produced on my path to attaining that “ideal film” as “experimental films.”
