Liliana Cavani – Oltre la porta aka Beyond Obsession aka Beyond The Door (1982)

$

From Time Out Film Guide
There is something to be said for Liliana Cavani, but it is difficult to remember what it is. The cruelty of her Night Porter was ruined by sentimentality, and Beyond Good and Evil managed to conflate Nietzsche and Robert Powell in a ménage à trois. Beyond the Door is the usual mix of cheapjack sentiment, cutprice Freudian familial relations, and a baffled cast running way over boiling point. Giorgi (a madonna face) keeps her stepfather Mastroianni (or maybe he’s her father) in a Moroccan prison after faking evidence against him over her mother’s death, so that she can keep her claws on his body, which she desires far more than the American oilman (Berenger, looking like a young Paul Newman) who desires her like mad but can’t understand what’s going on here. Un peu tortueuse, hein? There are some dinky touristique scenes in the brothels of Marrakesh, that mosaic city which caters to the devices and desires of your heart; but it should all have been made in hardcore by Gerard Damiano (Behind the Green Door). CPea.

The film is Yasuzo Masumura’s last feature film, based on Mio Saito’s novel which wons him a Seishi Yokomizo Award, shot by Setsuo Kobayashi, principle cinematographers of such Kon Ichikawa & Yasuzo Masumura classics as Fires on the Plain, An Actor’s Revenge, Being Two Isn’t Easy, Ten Dark Women, A Wife Confesses, Red Angel, Blind Beast, Manji, Black Express… (Indeed I think he’s responsible for the look (for example, the tight framing & deep focus) of these films). The film also boasts a fabulous cast, including Tetsuro Tamba, who seems uncredited.

A film thought to be lost until 5 reels (out of 9) were found in the UCLA archives. It was derived from an eponymous play by Marcel Achard which allowed to reconstruct he synopsis. Jean Gabin is the captain of the Cormorant, a horse-drawn barge, living happily along the canals with his sister Mique and Sylvestre (Pierre Blanchar), his fellow mariner and friend. The film starts with Gabin rescuing a young lady named Marinette (Madeleine Renaud) who had fallen in the canal for unsaid reason. Gabin soon also falls (for her), they get married and the boat is renamed ‘la Belle Marinière’ (the handsome she-mariner). During the wedding party returns Sylvestre (a handsome he-mariner) who had been away for the necessities of the script. He will now be the object of a growing interest from Marinette which results in the expected confict between the two men.

Synopsis:
A psychedelic re-telling of the biblical story. Salome is the daughter of the second wife of King Herod. The King is infatuated with her and after she fails to seduce the prophet John (The Baptist) she dances for the King in order to ask for his execution. Jacques Tourneur – Great Day in the Morning (1956)

Film Society of Lincoln Center Writes:
Tourneur’s moral and aesthetic complexity elevates this dark, anti-heroic western. Set on the brink of the Civil War, the deceptively titled Great Day in the Morning stars Robert Stack as a smooth-talking, opportunistic Southerner who drifts into Denver, his presence inflaming the already heated tensions between the Yankees and Confederates—and between two women he caddishly pursues, played by Virginia Mayo and Ruth Roman. As the film circles around themes of greed, jealousy, and violence, its increasingly sinister tone is mirrored by Tourneur’s intricate mise en scène, which begins in soft pastel hues and ends in noir shadows.

Robert Kramer – The Edge (1967)

Synopsis by Dan Pavlides
A group of disenfranchised radicals each under the age of 30 gathers often for coffee and intellectual discussions. They have worked for civil rights, the Appalachian poor, and the battle for racial equality. Now without causes to fill their lives, they feel an acute need to develop lives of their own. They discuss various ways to lead fulfilling lives while feeling guilty for abandoning the causes they championed so fervently in the past. One of them concocts a plan to assassinate the President (Lyndon Baines Johnson), but the group is divided as to whether to carry out the diabolical plot. The story unfolds in the six days leading up to what is only a proposed attempt on the chief executive. Although the group universally agrees LBJ is responsible for the deaths of many, some have reservations about carrying out the plan. Producer/director Robert Kramer makes a cameo appearance as a mental patient in this engaging political and social exercise in intellectual and philosophical discourse.

Synopsis:
A dock worker in Le Havre hears a human sound inside one of the containers in port, that container which left Gabon three weeks ago and which was supposed to arrive in London five days after its departure from Gabon, which didn’t happen. The Le Havre police and French border guards find a still alive group of illegal African immigrants inside. On the sign from one of his elders, a young teen boy among the illegal immigrants manages to escape, news of which hits the local media. The first friendly face that boy, Idrissa, encounters is that of former artist now aged shoeshine Marcel Marx. Marcel decides to help Idrissa by hiding him in his house, news which slowly trickles through his community of friends – most of whom he associates with at his local bar – and neighbors, most who assist Marcel in this task. Marcel goes to great lengths to find out Idrissa’s story, which leads to Marcel’s further task of trying to get Idrissa to London, his original end destination. The one neighbor who wants to turn Idrissa in and the authorities seem to be on to Marcel’s activities, most specifically hard nosed police Inspector Monet, who may have his own private agenda. Through it all, Marcel has on his mind the health of his terminally ill and hospitalized wife Arletty, the terminal aspect being something of which he is unaware and which may in turn eventually kill him as Arletty is his life.

Mircea Daneliuc – Proba de microfon AKA Microphone Test (1980)

$

An uncompromising and prolific auteur whose battles with censorship during the Communist era are legendary, Mircea Daneliuc doubles as director and star of Microphone Test, a pivotal film in Romanian cinema and a direct reference point for the future New Wave. The film’s protagonist, Nelu (Daneliuc), is a TV cameraman who falls for Ani, one of his interview subjects for a feature on misdemeanour offenders who have been caught on trains without a ticket. Unemployed and without a fixed address, Ani is the quintessential undesirable, an outcast in a society rigidly controlled by state-imposed morals. As Nelu finds himself torn between his casual but stable relationship with his colleague Luiza and his intense attraction to Ani, Microphone Test paints a raw and heart-wrenching portrait of personal liberation versus social(ist) conformity.

Peter Greenaway – The Belly of an Architect (1987)

$

Quote:
STOURLEY KRACKLITE (Brian Dennehy), the central figure in Peter Greenaway’s ”Belly of an Architect,” is at one point seen reflected in the central panel of a triptych mirror in his Rome apartment, wearing a blood-red robe and flanked by multiple Xerox copies of classically sculpted abdomens, copies he has made from photographs of Roman statuary. It’s a perfect moment, or at least the kind of perfect moment Mr. Greenaway favors: orderly, symmetrical and obscure, offering great compositional beauty but no compelling reason why its riddles require solution.

At another point in the film, Mr. Greenaway considers the fact that the British one-pound note bears not just a likeness of Sir Isaac Newton but also of some apple blossoms, which constitute a veiled reference to gravity. It’s an interesting fact but also a self-contained one, and it’s just the kind of information that floats untethered throughout the film.

Without question, Mr. Greenway deserves credit for naming his hero Stourley Kracklite, calling his villain Caspasian Speckler, and using his film to celebrate Rome and its architecture with such elegance and discernment. But ”The Belly of an Architect” may have as much to do with one man’s intestinal maladies as with art, beauty, obsession, permanence and mortality, subjects to which it also pays some attention. It’s hard to know. And watching the film’s visual obsessiveness – with architectural shapes and symmetry, with cool, stationary long shots, even with the marble surfaces and deep, velvety tones that give it visual texture – becomes an ever less rewarding pursuit as the measure of the film’s solipsism becomes known.

Kracklite, a renowned American architect, is first seen making love to his wife, Louisa (Chloe Webb), on a train bound for Rome, where he will live for nine months while staging an exhibition in honor of the French architect Etienne-Louis Boulee, a man who never traveled. The trip marks not only the birth of Kracklite’s tribute but also the conception of a Kracklite heir, though this is not discovered until later in the story. When it is, Kracklite wants to know on which side of the border the child was conceived; such are his and the film’s passion for detail.

While in Rome, Kracklite becomes more and more obsessed by Boulee, by architecture and by his own innards, which begin to bother him. He rails against Louisa, suspects her of trying to poison him (an idea, like many of Kracklite’s, generated by proximity to ancient Roman culture), and develops the belly fixation that induces him to study many photographs of Louisa’s belly, the Emperor Hadrian’s and his own. Mr. Greenaway accompanies these developments with dialogue rich in gamesmanship (”Are you a modern architect?” ”No more modern than I should be”) and with an extraordinary succession of studied, perfectly composed images. There is almost always an archway in the center of the frame. And in the center of that archway is, almost invariably, Kracklite.

Mr. Greenaway brings a welcome playfulness to some of this, as when he fuses the film’s concerns with ancient art and bodily deterioration into the figure of a man who surreptitiously chips the noses off statues (and has quite a collection). However, there’s nothing do be done with the film’s essential elusiveness, and in any case Mr. Greenaway seems to prefer it that way. ”The Belly of an Architect” does have a humanizing element in the form of Mr. Dennehy, who brings a robust physicality to Kracklite without missing the essentially cerebral nature of the role; this is one of the best things he has done. And as the highly undependable Louisa, quite unrecognizable from her ”Sid and Nancy” role, is Chloe Webb, who’s full of taunting flirtatiousness and speaks in a sleepwalker’s tone.

Jean-Gabriel Périot – Une jeunesse allemande AKA A German Youth (2015)

Quote:
At the end of the 1960s the post-war generation began to revolt against their parents. This was a generation disillusioned by anti-communist capitalism and a state apparatus in which they believed they saw fascist tendencies. This generation included journalist Ulrike Meinhof, lawyer Horst Mahler, filmmaker Holger Meins as well as students Gudrun Ensslin and Andreas Baader.
Their protest against the state led to the founding of the Red Army Faction (RAF). Constructed entirely from copious film and audio material, the film describes – without commentary – their gradual transformation and increasing politicisation until they take up armed resistance; it also describes the reactions of the government of the Federal Republic of Germany at the time. Jean-Gabriel Périot’s award-winning short films make elaborate use of archive footage in order to create incisive commentaries on violence and history. Une jeunesse allemande marks his first feature-length film. His work offers an outsider’s view of the Federal Republic of Germany in the RAF era; it also provides a lesson in radical behaviour and society’s reactions to it that is alarmingly topical, although the circumstances may have changed.
