La Fraction Armée Rouge (RAF), organisation terroriste d’extrême gauche, également surnommée « la bande à Baader » ou « groupe Baader-Meinhof », opère en Allemagne dans les années 70. Ses membres, qui croient en la force de l’image, expriment pourtant d’abord leur militantisme dans des actions artistiques, médiatiques et cinématographiques. Mais devant l’échec de leur portée, ils se radicalisent dans une lutte armée, jusqu’à commettre des attentats meurtriers qui contribueront au climat de violence sociale et politique durant « les années de plomb ».

“How did Meinhof, Baader, Meins, Hensslin and Mahler, all young German intellectuals born in the 1940s, end up planting bombs in the name of the Red Army Fraction (RAF)? How does a democracy create “enemies of democracy”, a term used by Helmut Kohl in a speech to describe the RAF? The film—a French edit, so to speak—proffers an answer in images and sound. Keeping to visual and sound archives, Jean-Gabriel Périot retraces the history of a radicalisation and its reception by the media. Ulrike Meinhof, introduced as a “student of education and chief editor of the review, Konkret” at a TV debate in the late 1960s, sharply replies to the host of another programme: “Analyse your own problems inside television rather than appropriating ours.” Establishing a tension between the elliptic nature of a compilation film and the ideological precision, if not rigidity, of the discussions, the film suggests that the bloody repression of the far-left demonstrations stems from the refusal of the generation born before 1914 to look into the uncompromising mirror held up to them by the following generation. “Our parents lost their credibility by identifying themselves with Nazism”, said Meinhof in a debate before opting for violence. The form chosen here clearly shows how the escalation of violence between two increasingly uncompromising entities played out. (Charlotte Garson)”

Full of beautiful scenery, poetically breathtaking symbolism, animalistic sex and behaviour, and notorious for its faint-inducing scenes involving fish-hooks. But put it all together and you have a dark love story and metaphor about abuse that passes on between people, islands of individuals that connect only through pain, metaphors about fishing lost people out of the waters, and the tragedy of beastly people that don’t know any better. Its only flaws are the too frequent scenes of nastiness and the artsy semi-happy ending that isn’t visually in line with the rest of this gripping, poetic piece.

Young music composer Viktor Honzl in vain looks for work. He is prevented from committing suicide by a technician of the gasworks who shortly beforehand has disconnected his gas due to past due bills. In the disguise of an older, serious, musical scholar Viktor obtains work in a music publishing house. So he may court Eva, publisher Durdys’s daughter, who he likes quite a bit, he recommends to the owner that he also employ his nephew. Understandably, this is he himself, in his every-day form. For Viktor, however, this becomes an extremely complicated situation as he switches in the place of business from the clothes of the uncle and then back again from the clothes of Viktor the nephew.

Synopsis:
Ange leaves New York to fly to his native Corsica. His mother is dying and Ange, who was not present when his father died, wishes to be present at her death. In Corsica Ange finds his brother Baptiste who married Maria, the woman he loved. He finds out that his father was killed, but nobody wants to tell him the name of the killer. And finally he finds two killers expecting him.

In spite of Yves Montand,the movie was not a big success for Pierre Granier-Deferre ,a director whose works found a huge audience in the seventies,although the critics,still Under the Nouvelle Vaguelette’s thumb,were more reserved .Today,they seem to have stood the time quite well:ground-breaking ,they were absolutely not.They were good stories,well told,well acted ,reviving the grand tradition of the “Cinema De Qualité ” ,a label which was never pejorative to my eyes.

Take “Le Fils” (=the son) :although its hero is a NY gang leader -a Corsican who emigrated -,it is not an action-packed movie : on the contrary ,it is a pastoral ,ecological (Mr Montand would reportedly have qualified the movie so)and quiet atmosphere,with a vague menace hanging over the hero’s head ,like a sword of Damoclès .We can feel something threatening in those luminous splendid landscapes (the movie was entirely filmed on location in Corsica;the director thanks the local inhabitants for their cooperation) but the screenplay focuses on life in a place where time seems to have stood still : the old dying mama ,who has probably never left her village ,the teacher still using inkwells whereas on the mainland the pen -holder was fast becoming a thing of the past,the brother guarding his sheep …

The movie moves very slowly and it may have discouraged some viewers ,who,after the first pictures in a desert New York city ,may have expected a genuine thriller ;it is actually vignettes of Corsica circa 1970,before tourism en masse:the most moving moment is when Montand and his teacher recite La Fontaine’s “Les Animaux Malades De La Peste”:the old man does not remember the words ,but his former pupil does ,a way for him to remember a time when he was young and innocent .Although he stays in touch with his accomplices (phone calls to American),we feel his regret not to have lived a simple safe life like his sibling (Frederic De Pasquale) who married his teenage squeeze (Léa Massari) he actually always loves.

Leonid Gaidai – Kavkazskaya plennitsa AKA Kidnapping, Caucasian Style (1966)

Leonid Gaidai’s irreverent comedy updates a Leo Tolstoy story for modern Soviet times, in the Caucasus region. Shurik, a naive Russian student mired in his own clumsy Soviet culture, sets off to the Caucasus to write down the folk culture of this region: its traditions, legends, sayings, and toasts.

At film’s start, Shurik, struggling with his donkey in an unspecified but Middle Eastern-feeling part of the Caucasus, meets the local Edik, who is struggling to fix his Soviet jalopy. Here they are passed by a vacationing young Russian girl, and pursuing her will take everyone through not only comic situations, but barbaric stereotypes of a culture and people being in some ways barbarically integrated into the USSR. In a 1999 overview, Kidnapping, Caucasian Style was listed as the 4th most popular box-office hit of the entire Soviet era, measured by number of moviegoers.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Soviet cinema turned to a comic genre foregrounding individual (personal) happiness, and increasingly many movies eschewed realism for an inverted chewing-gum reality. This change in the direction of the Soviet cinema also affected the portrayal of the Caucasus. Soviet directors came up with diverse depiction of different ethnic groups. Unlike Turksib (1929), which shows the illiterate and archaic periphery of the Union, White Sun of the Desert from 1970, for instance, “suggests ambivalence in the relationships between colonizer and colonized” and “offers countervailing positive images of Central Asians.”

A Soviet director, Leonid Gaidai, enjoyed and loved by millions of Russian people, approached the theme of the Caucasus and explored the meaning of Russianness in his movie of 1966, Kidnapping, Caucasian Style (Кавказская Пленница, или Новые Приключения Шурика). As Beumers (2005) notices, Gaidai’s popularity came to him “because [his movies] replaced the coherent linear plots of earlier Soviet films with an episodic and fragmented world that corresponded more to reality than the varnished fairy tales of Stalin’s cinema”.

‘We’re waiting to grow old’. This sentence briefly sums up Yaoyun and his wife Liyun’s bitter realisation about their lives. They were once a happy family – until their son drowned playing by a reservoir. And so Yaojun and Liyun leave their home and plunge into the big city, although nobody knows them there and they cannot even understand the local dialect. Their adopted son Liu Xing does not offer them the comfort they had hoped for either. Defiantly rejecting his ‘foreign’ parents, he one day disappears altogether. The married couple are repeatedly enmeshed in their memories. Finally, they decide to return to the site of their lost hopes.
In this family saga spanning three decades of Chinese history, the private and the political merge and the individual gets caught up in the gears of a society in the throes of constant change. Part melodrama, part critique of the times, this film takes us from the country’s upheaval in the 1980s following the Cultural Revolution to the prospering turbo-capitalism of the present day. Told in sweeping tableaux, it makes visible the deep scars that lie beneath the surface of an ostensibly unbroken success story.
